Every since Vick started to do well, many sports people have been trying to figure out why. Some suggested that it was because he is no longer using just his athletic abilities and has finally learned how to be a quarterback. Some say it is because of the calming influence of Andy Reid and the faith shown in him by Donovan McNabb. Either way, it makes watching the Philadelphia Eagles as enjoyable as watching any other team. It appears that the sky is the limit for this team but like everything else that may prove to be their undoing.
“Though the New York Giants had blown a seemingly-insurmountable 21-point fourth quarter lead over the Philadelphia Eagles , things weren’t as bad as they seemed. The game was tied with 14 seconds left and all New York had to do was kick a routine punt, watch the Eagles take a knee and then go into overtime, where they’d be able to reset, relax and focus on winning the pivotal NFC East matchup.
Surely nothing could go wrong … right? That’s the play of the NFL season so far. It was as improbable as the Jaguars’ miracle Hail Mary , but vastly more important in terms of playoff positioning. It changes the dynamics of the entire NFC race, putting Philly in prime position to earn a first-round bye and forcing the Giants to scramble for a wild card berth.” (Chase, Chris, 12/19/2010, Yahoo Sports, Video: Jackson’s game-winning 65-yard punt return stuns Giants , Retrieved from www.sports.yahoo.com ).
What I viewed as the number one reason the Eagles may wind up losing everything is the fixation of Reid and his offensive coaches attempting to keep Vick in the pocket and limiting his use of his legs in situation which lends itself to his ability to scramble. It’s somewhat disheartening to see the offense struggle so mightily and run what seem to be the same plays with the same results. I was beginning to think that success might just be what frightens the Eagles most, that was until the 4th quarter of today’s game against the New York Giants. It all started to really come together when the Giants began to believe that they had Vick’s number and would continue to pressure him all game long. They were very aware that the coaches were working on him to stay in the pocket and as long as they did not have to fear his legs, they had viewed him as one-dimensional. When Vick made his run for those 35 yards, I could see the wind slowly began to go out of the Giant’s sails. When he ran it in for a touchdown and threw the ball into the wall, you could just tell he was more focused, more determined and more motivated than the rest. That energy seemed to spread to the entire team and they all began to wait for that split second before they acted.
The thing which still worries me as to the Eagles throwing it all away. The fact that no one seems to hold onto the ball with both hands when they are about to encounter a defensive player. The fact that mistakes which are made on the field are not left there so that they can be learned from, they are carried with the players to the bench and sometimes beyond. Knowing all this I still say that the Eagles can write their own destiny and can beat any team in the National Football League (NFL) as long as they do not beat themselves.
