Simultaneously praising one white man (L. Ron Hubbard) and insulting the vast majority of white people (non-Scientologists), Louis Farrakhan recently praised Scientology for “civilizing” white people.
Louis Farrakhan reportedly praised Scientology in a public speech last Sunday for “civilizing” white people. [Source: The Editors of Boombox. As always, Farrakhan was blunt in his appraisal of the controversial religion. And, in an also-typical manner, he combined praise with insult.
Louis Farrakhan’s statement offensively implies that the majority of white people who are not Scientologists are not civilized. Although I do not know the percentage of whites who are Scientologists, it has to be less than one percent. And that implies that Farrakhan believes over 99% of whites are uncivilized. His comments on this matter do not seem particularly civil, but then I’m no Scientologist… The statement also implies that only whites need to be civilized by Scientology, and that other races are already civilized.
It is unclear why Farrakhan would single out Scientology as being particularly civilizing for white people. Tom Cruise and John Travolta seem pretty civil, I suppose. But many other religious teachings that are embraced by white people (e.g., Christianity, Islam, and Buddhism) also seem to have a civilizing effect. It is unclear why L. Ron Hubbard’s controversial teachings impress Louis Farrakhan so much. And, to make a broader point, it is unclear what Farrakhan means when he uses the word “civilized.”
His praise of Scientology does, of course, put Louis Farrakhan in the public minority – a position he likes to occupy. And praising a much-criticized religion pretty well guarantees news coverage for Farrakhan. He is a lifelong contrarian, and might be praising Scientology simply for the sake of disagreeing with the majority. There is no telling what is actually going through Farrakhan’s head at the moment.
We have to chalk up this latest comment about Scientology’s civilizing influence on white people to the Louis Farrakhan personality, which continues to shock and amuse us all.
