Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi does not have a lot of friends right now, but Hugo Chavez and Louis Farrakhan still like him. Farrakhan expressed his support last Sunday.
This week, Louis Farrakhan (famous political pundit and African American religious leader) spoke up in defense of Libyan dictator Gaddafi, whom he considers a friend. [Source: The Editors of Boombox. By standing up for Gaddafi, Louis Farrakhan joins the ranks of Hugo Chavez, another Gaddafi faithful. This week, Chavez referred to Gaddafi as a “friend” and refused to condemn him. Neither Chavez nor Farrakhan have suggested any way to help Gaddafi deal with the massive rebellion occuring in his country at this moment.
And it is difficult to understand how an overtly religious man like Farrakhan could support a tyrannical dictator like Gaddafi. Surely the oppression of Libyans must bother Louis Farrakhan at some level. Farrakhan tells his followers to be virtuous, which implies that he believes in the importance of freedom to act, and should therefore oppose Gaddafi’s totalitarianism. The fact that Farrakhan knows Gaddafi personally should not blind him to the dictator’s wrongdoing.
Farrakhan’s support for Gaddafi might result as much from Farrakhan’s contrarian personality as from his friendship with the dictator. Louis Farrakhan has always been one to take unpopular public positions. And few positions could be less popular than supporting Gaddafi at the moment. Not surprisingly, Farrakhan is one of the very few public figures to stick up for the soon-to-be-deposed dictator.
Whatever the reason, Louis Farrakhan is firmly on dictator Gaddafi’s side; moral support, however, is not enough to save Libya’s Gaddafi from the mess he is in right now.
