The “12 Men of Christmas” begins with E.J. Baxter (Kristin Chenoweth) living the New York lifestyle. She has a high paying job as a publicist and is engaged to a lawyer. At the company’s Christmas party, E.J. discovers her fiancé and her boss making out in the women’s bathroom stall. Her boss has the nerve to tell E.J. not to blow things out of proportion as her Gucci shoe hits the floor. E.J. picks up the shoe and breaks the heel off by banging it on the sink counter. E.J. smiles and gives it back to her boss. It was probably a knock off anyway.
In the next scene, E.J. is in a cab telling the driver how she got fired. At this point, E.J. has a good lawsuit on her hands. Instead of suing her former employer, E.J. goes to the office and gets her stuff. As she is leaving, E.J. bumps into her fiancé. He asked if she was okay, but that was a ruse to get the ring back. Classy guy.
Roz Baxter (Erin Dilly) consoles her sister, E.J., and encourages her to take a 12-month job in Minnesota. E.J. decides to take Roz’s advice and hauls it to Minnesota. E.J. is not impressed with the town of Kalispell at first, but she warms up to it. For example, she was pleased when she got a large rental house for around $500 a month and the landlord didn’t make her sign a long term lease.
Mayor Bob Baker hired E.J. to publicize the town so companies would have their corporate retreats in Kalispell. Plus, Mayor Bob wants to raise more money for rescue squad equipment. After getting lost in town a few times and continually bumping into the jerky Will Albrecht (Josh Hopkins), E.J. gets an idea that will accomplish all of the mayor’s request. That’s right, a nude, yet tasteful calendar of the Kalispell Rescue Squad. Most of the guys aren’t feeling the idea, but with a lot of persuasion E.J. gets them all to agree except for Will Albrecht. This doesn’t phase E.J. because she only needs 12 men and Will is the 13th man on the squad. So, E.J. throws him away and she was more than happy to let him know about.
The chemistry between Hopkins and Chenoweth doesn’t set your television on fire, but it’s enough to keep a viewer’s interest. They had more fire when they made snide remarks to each other. The scenes with E.J. talking to Roz on the phone were a nice touch. It shows how close the sisters are without taking up a lot of airtime with a backstory. The video montage of the men’s photo shoot was the best scene in the movie, naturally.
The “12 Men of Christmas” is based on the book Decent Exposure by Phillipa Ashley. It was published in 2006 and is described as a cute read by Amazon reviewers.
The “12 Men of Christmas” can be purchased on DVD for $18 from Amazon and $23 from Lifetime’s website. Both prices are unreasonable. The “12 Men of Christmas” is a good movie, but not good enough for those types of prices. Plus, it was originally aired on Lifetime in 2009. That’s a lot of money for a year old television movie that’s only 87 minutes long. If you want to see “12 Men of Christmas,” but don’t want to pay an outrageous DVD price, check the airdates below.
