Enjoy the moments as they are never repeated. Creation is such that that split-second of great possibilities is soon history. Never again! The whole equation changes, but what an equation! The most powerful computers can never crunch those numbers; much less, can we quantify the data? We are after all specs in the whole process. Who knows, our time will soon be up to be followed by another species; plain evolution at work. Our period on earth could be defined as another dinosaur era, in their terminology, of course!
But we need to play our own part in the whole evolutionary process. We cannot overstay our welcome. We need to suffer even the worst moments with the fervent hope that those also will pass. Obviously, the best moments are also fleeting. I have come to a stage in life to separate myself from the real physical and mental process, and become an onlooker. Just look at realities dispassionately, come what may. Do my best in an altruistic way; who benefits does not matter. Just contribute my might to general well being. Call it good karma or whatever; just the right thing to do, morally and by plain logic. I keep in mind the wise saying; what does not kill us goes only to strengthen us, experience and resolve wise. Just rewarding experience and none is excluded; the ups and downs. Even the worst illness passes and we breathe the fresh air soon. Fight on till the last, as I believe everything within us, both seen and unseen, will make us stay alive till overwhelmed by their adversaries. We are just the sum total of them. Just my belief! And we do leave our footprints in the sands of time!
Most are welcomed as a bundle of joy whether born, dirt poor or filthy rich or in between! Sorry to associate the poor and rich in such terms, but aren’t they common terms from times yonder? Soon it is life’s harsh reality; maybe getting complicated by each day as we try to reach a higher plain, a natural process. Some overreach, punch above their heights, to achieve. Most just partake in the whole process and a few content to watch the grass grow! But we need all to add variety to our existence; maybe the creator wanted it such way. Variety is the spice of life after all!
Soon it is time for reflection, yes, too soon for most! We are no more active players, the rug pulled off even violently from under our feet! But we adjust mostly, left with no alternatives! We slip into another being, watching others enact the roles and become passive players; difficult to get a word in! Some forced to just exist, even counting the days. And thinking about what lies ahead in another place, if at all. None is spared of doubts; it is said even Mother Teresa had them! We are in noble company!
Whatever our achievements, heroic at times at least to us, they are plain history. World can be cruel. It is played and replayed. A former ruler was supposed to be still in charge but I heard from the grapevine that he had reached a stage he could not even remember who he was! Even President Reagan supposedly told his wife, Nancy, after Secretary George Schultz visited him “he is a famous man, I know him”! That is life, we are no more what we were; mostly shells but with real feelings that can hurt real badly when pricked.
I have been a finance/accounts guy all my life. Frankly, I did not have real interest in other areas and just walked in with eyes closed. But I have no regrets; or rather, I insured myself against any regrets in life! Do my duty and get just desserts! But with all such mental balance, I have been asked when the accounts were swept clean of cobwebs and put on a firm footing – “what exactly does he do?” This is a profound question that many have to face in the evening of life. The best days are gone by, mostly forgotten by others, the present tottering existence could give a feeling that we have been freeloaders all life. But most live with quite dignity. Yes we did not have all glitzy gadgets and again remembering President Reagan; “we didn’t have them, but we invented them”!
Each stage is never easy; but we have to take it in the stride. We embrace life till the last breath and soak in the atmosphere, both the good and the bad. Our conscience should be our master and then questions meant to hurt are turned into sweet words, just realities of life! In another way, the good that we do lies interred with our bones but the evil, perceived such by others, live after us. It does not matter as long as our intentions were good!
