Leonardo DiCaprio is undoubtedly one of Hollywood’s hottest A-list actors with some great performances under his belt. Although DiCaprio was nominated for Best Actor in a Leading Role for his performance in “Blood Diamond” and “The Aviator,” and Best Actor in a Supporting Role in “What’s Eating Gilbert Grape,” Leonardo DiCaprio has yet to take home an award. Why has Leo had such bad Oscar luck?
Not Enough Nominations
Leonardo DiCaprio is no newbie to the acting game. Since the early 90s, DiCaprio has been working hard to make his name in Hollywood. Leo’s breakout role was undoubtedly the portrayal of Jack Dawson in “Titanic.” After the mega success of “Titanic,” Leonardo DiCaprio became a household name and a teenage heartthrob. Since then, DiCaprio has been in plenty of other movies such as “Shutter Island,” “Catch Me If You Can,” “Gangs of New York,” “Romeo + Juliet,” “The Basketball Diaries,” “Revolutionary Road,” and “Inception,” just to name a few. Yet Leonardo DiCaprio hasn’t been nominated for an Oscar in any of those categories. Simple probability tells you, the less you are nominated, the less likely you are to win.
Nominated in the Wrong Categories
When contemplating Leonardo DiCaprio’s lack of Oscar wins, Leslie Gornstein of E! Online spoke with Tom O’Neil of Gold Derby and O’Neil made an astute observation: often Leonardo DiCaprio gets nominated in the wrote Oscar category, further hurting his chances of a win. “He would’ve won four years ago if he’d been nominated for the right film, but he had two rival roles in the running and he got nominated for wrong one-“Blood Diamond”,” said O’Neil. He further noted, “If he’d agreed to campaign in lead for “The Departed” instead of supporting, he would’ve been nominated for that instead and probably would’ve won, riding its Best Picture sweep.”
Perhaps we are all overanalyzing the situation. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences is composed of a multitude of grumpy old men. It is possible that Oscar “voters go out of their way not to give it to young male heartthrobs,” as O’Neil suggests. Leonardo DiCaprio is already handsome and successful. Guess they feel he doesn’t need to add ‘Oscar winner’ to his resume. Hopefully DiCaprio will have better luck next year with the 2011 release of “Red Riding Hood” which Leo will be producing. There’s always next year Leo!
