Lauren Turner is a singer from New Orleans, Louisiana. She has also spent some time pursuing a music career in Nashville, Tennessee. According to JoesPlaceBlog, Lauren has made the Top 40 round on the 10th season of American Idol. If she gets picked for the first live voting round, which is a Top 20 format this year, then Lauren will compete against 9 other girls for five girl spots in the final round (traditionally the Top 12). She could also possibly get picked as a producer/judge wildcard, which has been brought back again for Season 10.
This is not the first time Lauren has made it fairly deep in American Idol competition. According to her MySpace, she made it through to the Hollywood rounds in Season 4 (eventually won by Carrie Underwood) but failed to get picked for the Top 24 voting round.
Lauren Turner lists herself as a blues and soul singer. Her influences include Ray Charles, Aretha Franklin, Christina Aguilera, Etta James, Otis Redding, The Beatles and KT Tunstall. In fact, she sounds similar to Aguilera in vocal tone and style. Lauren even won a local Christina Aguilera impersonation contest when she was younger.
Turner’s MySpace has a couple of recording as of the time of this writing (Idol contestants frequently delete or privatize their MySpace and other social-media accounts) – “Between the Covers” and “Poor Li’l Lost Girl.” These recordings certainly show a pretty strong voice like an Aguilera, but the vocal tone is consistently average. Other than power, there doesn’t seem to be anything special about her singing. I will not judge the actual songs, as Idol is not a songwriting contest.
Lauren needs to put more soul into her performances, but this is easier said than done. Soul starts with the vocal tone. You either have it or don’t have it. Of course, we need to hear more live performances to draw a conclusion, but the recordings on Turner’s MySpace are lacking in the kind of vocal tone or phrasing that creates emotional performances. The vocal style is very straightforward and lacks originality. This needs to be improved for her to win Idol.
In some respects, Lauren has similarities to Siobhan Magnus from Season 9. There are a lot of very raw skills, but she needs to put that together into more creative and emotional performances. It’s like putting together a puzzle. Lauren Turner has most of the pieces of the puzzle to be a great singer. She now needs to learn how to put those pieces together to give more effective performances. Otherwise, she will likely fall short of her goal of becoming the American Idol for Season 10.
