The Lady Gaga Grammys 2011 night made headlines early. Of course, the Lady Gaga Grammys 2011 performance, and awards results, was never going to be the big story. In these events, she always sets the bar high early with her appearance, and whatever big stunt she has planned for the red carpet. Yet after her meat dress and various other outfits, even she may have had a hard time topping herself. Instead, Lady Gaga’s appearance hatched its way into the headlines before she emerged from her egg to take a few awards.
No one could spot the artist herself on the red carpet, but when several people were seen carrying a giant egg, it was obvious where she was. This time, her big entrance was to literally be hatched out, as, for once, her outfit wasn’t her big stunt for the occasion.
Although the entrance was wild by even her standards, there was still a lot more for Gaga to do. Last night was originally scheduled to mark the debut of “Born This Way,” but she couldn’t wait and posted it online two days earlier. However, she still sung it in front of a live audience for the first time.
On the awards side of things, she was up for several major honors. “The Fame Monster” prevailed for Best Pop Vocal Album, while “Bad Romance” was recognized as the Best Female Pop Vocal Performance and the Best Short Form Music Video. To wrap things up, “The Fame Monster” was up for the Album of the Year honors.
But the night ended on a down note, as she and Eminem, Lady Antebellum and Katy Perry were upset by Arcade Fire. In addition, she wasn’t even the headlining Lady, as Lady Antebellum stole the show with five wins.
Still, the other Lady of the evening made out with three trophies, and was therefore one of the major winners. It was only icing on the cake, however, as Gaga debuted her new hit for a national audience – who had already compared it to “Express Yourself” all weekend – and showed that she had another huge stunt up her sleeve.
Yet the Grammys entrance could have been bigger, as she hatched from a smaller egg on stage before “Born This Way.” According to USA TODAY, she was supposed to hatch from her red carpet egg in front of the press, but the hatch stayed shut. Therefore, she found a more transluscent egg to hatch from on stage, which was easier to get out of.
While the egg raised the expected eyebrows, it’s unclear if it will overshadow the “Born This Way” Madonna comparison for too long. Even her victories last night may not brush that egg aside.
