Recently, I got my mail and who should I see on the cover of “Parenting: Early Years” magazine? None other than Kourtney Kardashian with her son, Mason. My first thought was that “Parenting” was desperate for readers and now turning to celebrity covers to sell issues. But I have to admit that my interest was piqued, so I flipped to the article to read about Kourtney’s relatively new life as a mother. While I’m far from ready to tout Kourtney as mother of the year, some of the interview surprised me, making me think there may be hope for this reality superstar yet.
She’d Rather Be With Mason Than Go Out
Kardashian told “Parenting,” “Unless I’m working, I can’t be away from him without feeling guilty,” and that “Mason comes first, no matter what.” She claims she has shed her partying, nightclub-going self, evolving into someone who would rather be at home in sweats eating pizza with her son. As a mother of four, I can appreciate the change that comes with having children. With your first, everything is new, and you want to be there for each milestone. It’s also tough to keep pace with your old life because having a baby is so exhausting. So since Kourtney is only one year into motherhood, only time will tell if she continues to eschew the nightlife for bedtime stories. My guess is that she’ll start to crave her former activities, but the proof will be in footage from her latest reality series, “Kourtney and Kim Take New York.”
She Doesn’t Have Help 24/7
If you’ve kept up with Kardashians on their reality TV series, you know that these girls are far from do-it-yourselfers. They enjoy luxury, from the best hotels with room service to designer clothes to spas. But Kourtney has taken a hands-on approach with Mason that’s refreshing in a world where the wealthy seem to delegate everything, including child-rearing. She claims to only use a nanny when working, and favors asking family to watch Mason, especially her stepfather, Bruce Jenner. She shares, ” . . . every time I’m not working, [Mason]’s with me.” Her mom, Kris Jenner, bought her a Beaba Babycook Baby Food Maker, which she uses to make all of her own baby food. And in the first months of Mason’s life, instead of obsessing about getting her pre-pregnancy body back, she decided it wasn’t worth it and lived in her PJs inside the house instead.
She’s Still a Celebrity
No matter how down-to-earth Kourtney may seem in her interviews about mothering, she’s still a famous Kardashian sister making quite a hefty living. While she may share a common bond with mothers in some areas, her struggles pale in comparison to the average mom. Struggling to get an expensive stroller out of a taxi isn’t really a problem compared to the moms struggling to get food on the table in this economy. And when Kourtney gushes about keeping her son with her, even at work many times, other moms have to juggle work, daycare, and other responsibilities without being able to afford help at every turn. Mothering may make Kourtney Kardashian more endearing and aware of others besides herself, but she’s still a far cry from the mom next door.
