Superstars Keith Urban and Nicole Kidman recently had their second child, Faith Margaret. The birth was veiled in secrecy, but now Kidman is willing to reveal the details.
When asked why little Faith’s impending birth was kept secret, Kidman explained, “We just decided this was our thing together.” [Source: Orloff, Brian. “Why Nicole Kidman Kept Baby Faith a Secret.” People.com. 1/30/11, downloaded at: http://www.peoplestylewatch.com/people/stylewatch/package/article/0,,20449765_20462155,00.html] Apparently, for Keith Urban and Nicole Kidman, the pregnancy was more meaningful if it remained a personal, family event.
Most parents should be able to understand that. In fact, I think it is admirable for a celebrity to downplay the media aspect of a child’s birth, instead of playing it up for free publicity as many celebrities do. Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban certainly seem like the types who have children for their own sakes, rather than as publicity totems. My best guess is that their children will be better off in the future as a result (i.e., hopefully lower chance of substance abuse and all the other problems that children of celebrities have).
Regarding little Faith’s name, Kidman explained that, “We needed to have that through the whole pregnancy,… That’s what it required was a lot of faith.” The need for faith presumably resulted from the age of Kidman at the time of birth (43), which complicates everything. Faith’s middle name, “Margaret,” is Kidman’s grandmother’s name. Through this whole pregnancy and birth, Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban come off as normal parents who happen to be celebrities, rather than as celebrities who happen to be having a baby. Little Faith Margaret is fortunate to be born into a family with parents who treat her as an end in herself, rather than as a piece of promotional literature. Her half-siblings (the children from Kidman’s marriage with Tom Cruise) are, of course, subjected to much harsher limelight, and are constant fodder for tabloid newspapers.
