Having children can cause a massive amount of toy clutter within the home. And all parents love having toys in the home that are entertaining and cute. But it can get out of hand, and you need to know how to keep things neat.
Toy free zones
Our family lives in an apartment, so we don’t have a ton of room for toys. We created rooms in the home where no toys are allowed to be, unless they ask for permission and then put them back after they are done. Our children are allowed to have as many toys as they want out in their bedroom, as long as they stay in the bedroom and don’t get into rooms such as the bathroom (except their bath toys) kitchen and mommy and daddy’s room. It makes for cleaning much easier.
When you notice your kids are leaving toys in toy free areas, warn them that they need to return the toy to where they got it from. It may seem mean but it is necessary for them to understand rules. If they don’t move the toys then you can take them away for a week or two. Be prepared to be rough with them about this rule because I guarantee that they will try to fight you on it.
If you really want to make things neat try getting a few totes or toy boxes. Have your children fill the boxes up and whatever fits can stay the rest will go into another tote for storage or give away. Make sure if you store the toys to bring them out every few months and switch them with the ones that are already out, ti will give your child something to do and be excited about.
Go through the room regularly
On a regular basis go into each of your children’s rooms and organize and sort though toys. Get rid of toys that you have not seen your children use in quite awhile because at some point your child will outgrow some toys and will need the extra room for new toys that are age appropriate. You can give them to charity, sell them on eBay or even give them to a family member. When your children are old enough to help, have them go through toys and clean their room.
Without fail every year for any holiday my children get Christmas presents. Even if we tell people that they don’t need more toys they get them. So we determined the best way to handle this is too let the kids keep the new toys with one condition. That for each toy they receive that they give one toy of equal size away. It helps keep the clutter to a minimum. You child may fight you on it, but don’t back down take the new toy away until they decide which toy will go.
Too many toys is a part of raising kids for the most part, you will have to deal with it at any point in time until they are older. It may not be fun, but it’s a part of life. Your best bet is control it too the best of your ability and don’t lose it every time something goes wrong.
