If your family is opting to stay closer to home for spring break, beware that this choice can provide relief for your pockets, but you may still have the dilemma of conjuring up ways to entertain your little ones for an entire week. Before you let this thought overwhelm you, consider this 5 day itinerary of educationally entertaining activities that can be enjoyed by everyone from tykes to tweens.
Nature Day – Science
Discussion: Predict how long it will take the seeds to sprout.
Activity: Plant a sunflower garden. This easy task requires seeds, pots, water, soil and a sunny location. Let your helper fill the pot with soil and lightly press in the seeds about an inch deep. Place in direct sunlight and keep the soil moist. As your plant grows, replant it in a larger pot or garden with plenty of sunlight.
Chef Day – Science/Math
Discussion: Which heat transfer method is involved in baking: convection, conduction, or radiation?
Activity: Make pizzas for the whole family. Gather up your favorite toppings along with cheeses and your favorite sauce. Chop up the ingredients and let your child layer them on a ready-to-cook crust. Once your dish is ready, talk about fractions as you let them divvy out the slices.
Fitness Day – Science/Physical Fitness
Discussion: What muscles are involved in certain sports activities?
Activity: Get the family together for a game of paintball at your local arcade. Your children will enjoy watching you let your hair down and get active. After you play, refresh everyone with an ice cream or smoothie treat.
Service Day – Service Learning/Diversity
Discussion: Imagine what it’s like to live in a hospital?
Activity: Make inspirational cards for children at a local hospital. Fold cardstock in half to make a greeting card embellished with markers, crayons, paints, and other items. Include a positive message that is sure to bring a smile.
Art Day – Art
Discussion: What famous artists do you know?
Activity: Create art for your home. Choose your colors and paint a favorite daily inspiration, or just let their imaginations run wild with some abstract art. If you purchase wrapped canvases for your project, you won’t have to purchase frames.
Show your child that you too are having fun with these activities. As you facilitate discussions, ask questions to engage your child both cognitively and creatively. When you teach your child, you’ll be amazed at what you learn.
