I wonder if Kate Middleton ever dreamed of becoming a princess when she was little. If she did, then her dream came true. Her Prince Charming, Prince Williams of Wales, proposed to her in November of 2010, and the royal wedding will take place on April 29, 2011.
Looking polished like born royalty, Middleton and Prince Williams recently visited their alma mater, University of St. Andrews. But royalty was far from Middleton’s reach when she first arrived at the prep school years ago. Only after meeting the handsome prince was she able to embark on a journey into the palace. From a normal school girl to future Princess, Middleton’s real-life Cinderella story touches all the little girls with a dream.
Middleton was born in Reading, Berkshire. Mom was a flight attendant and dad was a flight dispatcher and an airline officer. Her grandparents were municipal workers and miners. Growing up as a big sister to two younger siblings, Middleton spent her childhood in the humbleness of middle class.
In 1987, Middleton’s parents, Carole Elizabeth and Michael Francis Middleton, found Party Pieces, a mail order company selling party supplies and decorations. Because of the success of the company, Middleton was able to attend better schools.
Middleton went to St. Andrew’s School in Berkshire, then to Downe House School, then to Marlborough College and eventually St. Andrews, where she and Prince Williams met.
At Marlborough, Middleton was just another teenage girl who excelled as an athlete in cross country and field hockey. At St. Andrews, Middleton and Prince Williams started out as friends, and even lived together in a flat with two other roommates. Young Middleton lived a pretty normal life as an Art History student. But Prince Williams eventually took a liking to the brunette beauty, and the two of them dated in secret until a ski trip in 2004.
After going public during the ski vacation in Switzerland, Middleton got a bitter taste of the media. After she graduated, even though Middleton tried to live a regular life as a working woman in London, she never left the watchful eye of the public. As many speculated, she was going to be the next Princess.
But in 2007, Middleton and Prince Williams split after realizing that they had grown apart from their college days. Also, the relentless media caused tension to rise. A few months later, the two reunited. And their relationship has been growing stronger. In 2010, Prince Williams finally proposed during a trip to Kenya, with the same ring his mother, the late Princess Diana, once wore. Middleton is now officially a Princess in waiting.
Some compare Middleton to the late Princess Diana, as Diana was also from a middle class family who received an unbelievable amount of luck to suddenly become royalty. But many argue that Middleton is a woman in her own, and we’d like to believe that. We’d also like to believe that in the years she will reign as England’s Princess and perhaps someday Queen, Middleton becomes a role model to all the little girls out there who dreams of becoming a Princess someday.
