The Kansas loss to Kansas State on Valentine’s Day really shows that Ohio State should still be No. 1 in the college basketball rankings. Only hours after the latest polls revealed that Kansas had taken the top spot away from Ohio State, Kansas State blew out Kansas 84-68. It wasn’t even as close as the final score made the game look, and with all due respect to Kansas State, they still have a losing record in the Big 12 Conference.
The coaches just finished punishing Ohio State for losing to No. 10-ranked Wisconsin, and suddenly Kansas can’t even beat an unranked team within their own conference. Sure, the Kansas vs. Kansas State match-up is a rivalry game, but the No. 1 team in the country shouldn’t be losing to an unranked team at this point in the college basketball year. This loss should make the Ohio State fan base pretty happy, and it will also result in some of those coaches abandoning the band wagon that Kansas had formed.
KSU was led by guard Jacob Pullen, who went for 28 points on the night, almost single-handedly controlling the tempo of this game. His ability to get to the free throw line was what worked best for KSU, and hitting 5-6 from three point range didn’t hurt things either. On the defensive end, the Wildcats held the Jayhawks to just 20 percent from three point range and proved that they could actually be a nice threat in the Big 12 Conference Tournament this March.
As for the voters in the polls, it will be very interesting to see what happens in the week 16 Coaches Poll, especially with Ohio State having been bumped all the way to No. 3. Shouldn’t they move back to No. 1, especially since Texas was getting extra credit for beating Kansas this season? Now Kansas has two losses, Texas has three losses, and Ohio State still only has one loss on the season. It’s time for the voters to wake up around the country and to try to get the polls right next week.
It’s not like Ohio State won’t have to prove themselves this week either, as they have to play Michigan State and then No. 11 Purdue over the weekend. Winning both games should guarantee them the top spot in the college basketball rankings, especially because the Wisconsin vs. Purdue game on Wednesday will increase the RPI ranking for the winner of that game.
As for Texas, they play against Oklahoma State and Nebraska this week, two more teams with losing records inside the Big 12 Conference this season.
