Among all the glamorous Hollywood couples pouring into the 2011 Oscars last night, you might have caught a glimpse of a new couple: Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez. Although they previously avoided questions about their relationship, the two teen idols showed up in matching outfits last night.
Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez’s matching outfits were reportedly designed by Dolce and Gabbana. The two were openly affectionate at the Oscars, clearly announcing that they are now an official couple. Bieber is 16 years old while Gomez is 18. While the matching outfits are cute, the Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez hook-up at the Oscars raises some questions. First, why is 18-year-old Selena Gomez dating a 16-year-old? If a thirty-year-old actress were dating a twenty-eight-year-old actor, that would be no big deal. But when you are a teenager, a two-year age gap matters. So that’s kind of strange. And while Gomez probably sincerely likes Bieber, her relationship with him seems just slightly like a publicity stunt.
Second, while adult Hollywood couples can be glamorous, aren’t teen couples dressed as adults kind of creepy? Society has set the statutory rape age limit at 18, and I kind of take that as the societal norm for the appropriateness of serious relationships. I’m sure Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez are good kids, and everything, but I really don’t need to see their puppy love dressed up and on display in matching outfits at the Oscars.
Third, do Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez plan to do like Macaulay Culkin and marry as teenagers? I hope they have learned from Culkin’s experience. Matching Oscar outfits are fine. Teen marriage is not.
For these and other reasons, the Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez relationship seems kind of odd, and their appearance at the Oscars together was a little unsettling. On the upside, though, I am sure their fans (which are largely the same people) are just eating this up. A Justin Bieber guest spot on Wizards of Waverly Place can’t be far away.
