In “Justified” Season 2 Episode 2 “The Life Inside,” Ma Bennett explains to Loretta that her daddy had to go away for a while to heal and help run the operation down south. Daddy is really at the bottom of a hole covered in quick lime.
Arlo, Raylan’s parole dad, has broken the boundary of his ankle bracelet mainly because his wife has gotten angry with him and put him out of the house. Raylan has to explain to both of them what house arrest means.
Spoilers surely follow.
In the meantime, Raylan has started sleeping with Winona, his ex-wife, again. This will not end well, one suspects. Raylan’s good friend Boyd has returned to coal mining, a respectable occupation for a man who likes making a quick buck and blowing things up. Boyd has had another life-changing development that we may mention toward the end of this account.
This week’s assignment for Raylan and another deputy is to transport a very pregnant inmate from the local prison to her doctor and back. It would seem to be a simple task, but one that is complicated by the sudden appearance of two gentlemen in the waiting room with guns. Raylan and his partner are forced to hand cuff one another and the pregnant prisoner is spirited away.
Raylan and his new partner, after having been freed from this embarrassing situation, soon determine that one of the guards at the prison had made the woman pregnant and hired the two men to spirit her away. She thinks that the guard will leave his wife and run away with her and the baby.
The plan is actually for the baby to be born and then sold to a couple for $50,000 and for the woman to be killed and then disposed of. One of the thugs is an EMT and had not been informed of the last aspect of the plan. Baby stealing is one thing. Murder is something else entirely.
The woman, suspecting something is up, tries to escape, a rather dangerous move for someone who is nine months along. The EMT is shot by his partner. Then Raylan and his partner appear and there is a standoff with the criminal holding his gun to the woman’s stomach. Whereupon Raylan explains to him the meaning of a sniper’s term “the apricot.” Then the criminal is shot through it.
And Boyd’s life changing situation? He is now sleeping with Ava, who had been Raylan’s mistress in Season 1 and shot Boyd’s brother. Something else, that has made Boyd the worse for wear, is going on as well. One suspects we shall find out what it is in the fullness of time.
