When we last left our intrepid heroes, Raylan, Boyd, and Ava were pinned down by a couple of hitters from the Miami Cartel who were after Raylan for that shooting that took place at the beginning of the series “Justified.”
Spoilers surely follow.
“Justified” Season 2 Episode 1 “The Moonshine War” spends the first 15 minutes wrapping up the Raylan Givens vs. the Miami Cartel story line that so littered the first season with bodies. The result was one dead assassin, one critically wounded assassin, Boyd run off to parts unknown after a stay in the hospital, a much chastened cartel jefe, and an offer that Raylan was happy to refuse from his old boss in Miami.
Back in Kentucky, a miscreant named Jimmy Earl Dean is pestering a 14-year-old girl going on 40 named Loretta who is working in her father Walt’s marijuana business. He of the three first names had not learned the wages of statutory rape while in prison and Raylan, who is trying to work on his tendency to shoot people, and Rachel have to go and get him.
Complicating matters is the fact that Jimmy Earl Dean works for the Bennett family, run by a matronly lady named Mags whom Raylan has known since childhood. It seems that the Bennetts control the moonshine and marijuana industries in Harlan County and do not cotton too well to independent entrepreneurs like Walt. They are also put out that Walt called the cops on Jimmy, who, as it turns out, works for them.
This results in Walt being shot and his leg savaged by a bear trap. Later, it results in his death.
Meanwhile, Jimmy Earl Dean kidnaps Loretta and takes her in the trunk of his car with the intent of conveying her across state lines for immoral and pretty gross purposes. Raylan and Rachel catch up to him in the parking lot of a gas station. Raylan sets up something for the Mythbusters to examine when he douses Jimmy with gasoline and then tells him that the spark from his pistol is likely to ignite the fumes. Raylan actually doesn’t know if this is the case or not but it does sound good and was enough to get Jimmy to surrender without gun play.
Mags Bennett takes care of Walt in a really creepy manner by poisoning his apple-flavored moonshine. “Oh, this is the bad part. But it doesn’t last long. … All the troubles of your hard life, it’s all gone now.” Mags promises the dying Walt she will raise Loretta as her own.
It looks like the Bennett family is going to be a bother for Raylan and company as they try to move into the void left by the decimation of the Crowders. Mags, the Godmother of Crime in Harlan County, has made two mistakes, besides being a criminal inside the jurisdiction of Raylan Givens. Loretta is very likely to find out sooner or later who killed her father and is likely to go all Mattie Ross on the Bennetts (Raylan certainly has True Grit to spare.) And Boyd is still on the loose; it appears that he will have something to say about the ambitions of the Bennett family.
