John Lennon quotes have been studied for almost 50 years. But every Dec. 8, John Lennon quotes get extra attention, since the man who made them was silenced on that day. Since it happened 30 years ago today, this is an extra special anniversary. The assassination may have happened three decades ago, but it might still feel like yesterday to those most affected. Because they took such value in Lennon’s quotes and lyrics, his loss is still felt around the world.
Although Lennon was one of four Beatles, he came to hold a special place on his own in the culture. His messages and ideals put him on a worldwide pedestal – although Mark David Chapman’s pedestal turned out to be too high.
There would be no more John Lennon quotes or songs after Dec. 8, 1980, when Chapman took his deadly shots. The mere concept that he could be killed like this seemed too surreal to many, and too hard to believe. To cap off the madness, the first announcement of his death was held on Monday Night Football, of all places.
The JFK and RFK assassinations are often cited as America’s loss of innocence. But to many, what innocence and hope they had left was partly due to Lennon, as he maintained the highest ideals of the ’60s. Therefore, when he fell, it was a blow that spread beyond the music world.
30 years later, his fans still try to live by the most famous quotes and songs. Of course, his most famous words may be in “Imagine,” as he assures listeners that he isn’t the only dreamer. But one of his most cited phrases, “Life is what happens to you while you’re busy making other plans,” appeared in one of his final songs, “Beautiful Boy (Darling Boy)”
Not all of his sayings were immediately beloved, however. The Beatles’ infamous “Bigger than Jesus” scandal was kicked off by Lennon’s words in the teen magazine Datebook. It triggered massive protests in the United States, and disrupted their final U.S. tour together.
Even today, some might still be upset with his views on religion and the afterlife, especially in “Imagine.” Yet another of the famous quotes has him saying that he believes in everything “until it’s disproved.” Although he sang for people to imagine no heaven, on some level, he believed in the existence of everything – “even if it’s in your mind.”
30 years after he was silenced, Lennon and his quotes, songs and beliefs are still as loud as ever – and stand to stay that way for another 30 years and more.
