Working as a couple may be one solution to the financial crisis many families are facing during tough economic times. Many employers hiring duos provide housing, salary and sometimes benefits in return for managing their properties.
Easing the money situations of families, working as a motel manager, self-storage facility manager, truck drivers, innkeepers, camp directors and more, couples are finding their housing situations are no longer a problem.
Many of the positions available to couples include a two bedroom apartment or house attached to the property. For example, the home we are living in as we’re managing a motel, is beautiful. With a large kitchen, open living room with vaulted ceiling, two bedrooms and two bathrooms, it is located behind the front desk of the property. A separate entry allows us to have our own address, hear the door bell and live on property without paying for rent, utilities or maintenance normally accompanied with purchasing a property.
The mortgage payment, although it depends on the income of the motel, is not our responsibility. Our employer takes care of the bill and is also in charge of advertising, gaining accounts or establishing relationships with the community etc. It’s not that we can’t or won’t do this part of the job, it’s just our employer wants to take care of these things.
Laundry facilities are adjacent to the house and are included in the perks. There’s a garage which attaches to the kitchen and a deck for grilling and enjoying the outdoors. Cable TV, Internet and phone are also provided by the property owner making it a great deal just in the cost of housing alone.
Facilities requiring 24/7 on-site management usually provide a salary as well as housing. Ranging from $1200 – $2500 per month depending on the responsibilities of the position are normal for working couples. Self-storage units have set office hours which need to be manned by the couple, although access is 24/7 for the tenants. Some places provide relief workers however most do not. It’s a job which requires the couple to understand when you’re in charge, you’re responsible for everything. Any of the jobs for couples providing assistance are another benefit, but should not be expected.
Working limited hours with salary, housing and benefits is attractive when working at places such like self-storage units, campsites, resorts with seasonal responsibilities. Some of these properties are very remote meaning the only access may be a flying in a small commuter plane. Others are located in cities with a lot of traffic. The properties with a lot of traffic are usually the ones providing housekeeping or extra workers for the couple manager.
Remote locations are more likely to depend heavily on the couple to do all the work.
Benefits are also part of some packages offered to working couples including 401K, health insurance and other perks which might include access to a gym, swimming pool, boats, cars and food.
Senior citizen homes requiring a resident manager couple provide meals on top of a great salary.
If you’re considering working as a couple, consider the amount of time you’ll be spending together, whether you like interacting with people or individual families and if you’re great at running a household. If you fit this description, working as a team might just be a great way to get through these hard times and still earn a living.
