If you just purchased a mobile home, or currently live in one and are sick of the look of your kitchen, you can change its appearance on a budget. A little creativity and hard work can make the world of difference in a mobile home’s kitchen. Remodeling on a budget can create a dramatic new appearance to any room in any home.
The largest item in a kitchen is the appliances. If you can afford too, replace both or one of them – the oven or the refrigerator. Replacing old appliances with new appliances instantly creates a new appearance in the mobile home’s kitchen. If you wish, you can shop around for gently used appliances to save a dollar or two. A few places to look for gently used appliances are consignment stores, thrift stores or a store that carries slightly damaged appliances such as a dent in the back that no one would ever see. Change the color of your appliances that are currently in your kitchen for a dramatic appearance – for example, if your kitchen has white appliance opt for black or stainless steel.
You can paint paneling in a mobile home without having to replace it. Remove all nails or screws in the walls and gently wash them with mild detergent, water and a rag. Darker shades of paint such as reds do not need as many coats as lighter shades of paint. Painting the walls in a mobile homes kitchen creates an updated appearance and hides the dreaded wooden paneling. Typically, you will need to apply two to three coats of paint per wall.
Instead of replacing your electrical switch plate covers, bases of light fixtures and cabinet door knobs, simply remove them and spray paint them. Spray paint comes in a large variety of colors and finishes such as metallic’s or textured paint. For a dramatic appearance select a metallic spray paint and paint all knobs, electrical switch plate covers, and bases of light fixtures. People will think you spent a small fortune updating these, in reality; you spent a small amount of money and a little time to create this look in your home’s kitchen. Allow the paint to dry before reinstalling.
If you wish to hang wallpaper instead of painting paneling, do not allow the paneling to imitate you. You can hang wallpaper successfully over paneling. Select wallpaper in colors and patterns of your choice and apply to the walls as you would drywall. Clean the walls with mild detergent, water and a rag before applying wallpaper as this prevents any dust or debris from preventing the wallpaper from adhering to the paneling.
Replace old outdate light fixtures with new ones. Light fixtures immediately draw the eye toward them, making them one of the most common things in a remodel to replace. You do not need any special electrical skills to replace your light fixture, simply follow the manufacturer’s directions for the specific light fixture you select for your kitchen.
