Later in the afternoon Alaura left their palatial house in the hills to go to see Dr. Manning. All along Alaura had misled Alexander. Dr. Manning isn’t a psychiatrist, but he is a cardiologist. Alaura had avoided telling Alexander that she was having heart problems. They weren’t mild problems either. If they weren’t monitored or controlled by medicine they would become fatal. Alaura knew there was a chance she could die. She didn’t tell Alexander for the simple fact that she didn’t think he would even care.
Dr. Manning had just taken the electrodes off of Alaura’s chest. He didn’t seem too happy with what the results of the tests. “Alaura, have you stopped taking your medication, again?” Dr. Manning asked concerned. She looked up the doctor with somber eyes. “No, I’ve been taking it three times a day just like you told me to.” Alaura replied as she lowered her eyes to the floor. “Is something going on at home?” The doctor asked. “No, why would you say that?”
“Alaura your heart is beating irregularly again. Too irregularly. If you’re taking your medicine three times a day then it has got to be something else! Now what is it that’s bothering you? Is it Alexander?” Manning asked as he put his hand onto her shoulder.
Alaura didn’t know how to answer him. No one wanted to hear a bad word against Alexander Talbot! He was far too powerful and prosperous to make anyone think he was far from perfect! Alexander was the youngest corporate executive to be promoted to president in less than ten years. He was only twenty-six when he started at Grisham. At twenty-seven he was already president! Alaura didn’t want to ruin his reputation by admitting that their perfect marriage wasn’t at all what it seemed to be. “Everything is perfectly fine.” Alaura replied softly.
“Try not to over exert yourself! Your anniversary is coming up! Why don’t you and Alexander go away for the weekend? I’m sure you could both use some time alone together,” Dr. Manning paused. “I don’t think that would be a very good idea.” He explained. “Why not? It’ll be good for you to get out of the house. How long has it been since Alex put his work aside and spent some quality time with you? I’m sure he’d be happy to take you somewhere if you asked him to.”
“If you only knew how he really is.” Alaura said under her breath. Alexander didn’t want to talk to her much less spend a whole weekend with her. They hadn’t spent a weekend together since before Alaura had the miscarriage. There was no way she would be able to convince Alexander to leave his work behind and spend some quality time with her.
