Winter skating is a fun cold weather activity in Dayton, Ohio. The winter weather is mild, yet cold enough for the rink to be open most days from late November through March. The scenic park overlooks The Great Miami River. The skating at Riverscape MetroPark has been very popular since it opened. This season they have a new rink that is fifty percent larger than the previous rink. They have located it under a beautiful covered pavilion. Skating can continue during inclement weather, such a wet sleet or heavy snow.
There is nothing more refreshing than to get outdoors on a brisk winter’s day and go out and exercise on the ice. The crowds on the weekend are polite and the safety rules are well enforced. Everyone from all areas of the city and surrounding cities enjoy the ice skating when weather permits. It’s always a good idea to call ahead to see if the rink is frozen and open for the day.
Gaily attired skaters in colorful knitted hats and scarves circle the rink every day of the week. All levels of skating ability is evident, from the wall hugger to the dashing enthusiast performing spins in the center. Pairs of dancing skaters waltz alongside senior citizens sedately gliding along. Little ones learning to skate on cute two bladed skates and happily mix with the children racing each other around the rink. The new roomy rink can accommodate a multitude of skaters easily now.
Riverscape offers skating lessons for those who may need to learn the basic fundamentals. The cost is nominal for a lesson, just $5.00 which includes your skate rental. This encourages everyone to come on out and participate. On Monday nights Broomball teams take over the ice for a few hours. Broomball is similar to hockey, but players wear shoes and pass the ball using brooms. This is quite competitive and the games are very exciting to watch.
The well lit park also has several fireplace pits that are heaped with logs and burn merrily during the hours the rink is open. These warming areas are lovely to sit in and enjoy the flames and smokey atmosphere. Non skaters can relax in the warmth and enjoy watching the skaters in their party.
Refreshments are available to purchase and enjoy while warming up beside the open fires.
It’s a joy to be outside in the winter, interacting with the community of skaters. It’s a great way to meet people and make new friends. Riverscape MetroPark has gone out of it’s way to make sure the rink is available to one and all.
