Don’t ya just love it when things play out so well and almost exactly how one imagined they would? When Huffington Post and AOL News merged the AOL/HuffPo news releases touted their new direction. As the LA Times offered “The Huffington Post could give AOL a much-needed boost in talent, traffic and ad inventory. Perhaps more important, it could also give the company an image makeover.”(My emphasis)
Let’s consider that “image makeover” thing for a second. AOL’s morning headline, as it is my homepage by default and I just never bothered to change it, revealed an immediate Huffington Post influence with the … “Time to Turn Off National Anthem Before Sports Events,” and featured a picture of Christina Aguilera in the midst of her flubbing the Anthem’s words.
For the record, I am sick of hearing Ms. Aguilera denigrated over this, and I AM NOT a fan of hers, but still, fair is fair. Clearly she did not do it on purpose. It’s a hard song to sing in the first place. Ms. Aguilera is a con summate professional at her craft and one in which she takes great pride, so let it rest fer Christsakes…she made an error. She demonstrated human frailty and messed up. Let it go! Jeeeez!
Is it mere coincidence that so many leftist denigrations about this nation take on our long held traditions? In AOL national columnist Kevin Blackistone’s article he tells us “There are, after all, a lot of people out there who argue that they don’t want politics to have anything to do with sports.” SAY WHAT????? Since when is singing the National Anthem, the Anthem of ALL AMERICANS, political or partisan? I’ll tell ya “since when.” Since the left decided everything traditional Americans do is in some way evil, untoward, hateful and in desperate need of change. They are the ones who made it political and in fact try and make everything they disagree with to be political or partisan.
Yet who is it who spends their days lately chattering about the “civility” thing? How is it civil to portray the National Anthem as political or partisan? Oh, that’s right…based entirely upon hearing the nonstop leftist denigrations about our nation and traditions and the people who hold them dear, it seems anything tradition demands seems worthy to lefties to take on and try to bring down. I mean it’s not me imagining their words, right? I know hate and denigration when I hear it. Sorry I am not PC enough to NOT mention it in polite company.
Mr. Blackistone seems to be queasy with the concept that “the National Anthem has absolutely nothing to do with sports but everything to do with war.” Oh! So now I get it! It’s the imagery! BS! It’s an effort to defame yet another tradition many Americans, specifically conservative Americans, hold dear.
Do others notice the odd juxtaposing of Mr. Blackistone’s point about the Anthem being misplaced in sports and then recall the Olympics? Hello? Don’t they play the national anthems of every nation whose athletes reach the podium in the medal ceremony? Hello? Asshats? Are ya listening? It is something MOST nations and the IOC clearly do! Even Mr. Blackistone mentions the Olympics in his recalling the Mexico City 1968 Olympics when the two black American athletes lowered their heads and raised their fists in the “Black Power” salute and political statement during the medal ceremony.
Clearly AOL, in their “much needed boost in talent, traffic and ad inventory,” have defaulted to gleefully embracing the “image makeover.” AOL will indeed see increased traffic and revenues with this move. I mean no less than The Exalted One Himself told Americans to read the Huffington Post for their news, so there’s that.
Lastly, let’s make sure to remember what a makeover really is… the new paint on the old product. It’s just a new look is all. It’s an effort to take the stogy old thing and make it appear full of glitz and glam but isn’t the reality it’s still the same old crappy thing in a shiny new box? One can makeover a turd, but it’s still a turd, no? This makeover is one that will I guess now embrace leading with what a terrible place this Hell hole of a nation really is. How absolutely delightful!
