Basketball is a fun team sport and is a great way to teach kids about the importance of exercise. Children who are as young as four and five can learn the fundamentals of basketball so they can grow into the sport, as they get older. There are some basics that they need to know in order to progress with the sport and the give them a good foundation. The following are some tips on how to teach basketball to kids:
Dribbling – One of the first skills that should be taught to children is how to dribble the ball. Dribbling is important because every aspect of the game requires it. The child should be given a regulation size ball even though it seems very large. Have them stand in a circle and simply spend time working on this skill. Using the tips of the fingers, bounce the ball off of the floor continuously. It is important for them to build up strength in the fingers because the palm of the hand should never be used for dribbling. Have them practice this skill at home as well.
Passing – Basketball is a team sport and you never want a child to think that they can hang on to the ball so they need to be taught to pass it. There are two basic passes that need to be taught. The first is the chest pass. This is where the ball does not touch the floor and is passed with both hands to the chest area of the person catching the ball. The second is the bounce pass and should be executed by using the court. The ball needs to be aimed at the floor and thrown hard enough so that it comes up at the waist of the person who is to catch it.
Shooting – Once the first tow fundamentals are learned, the child can learn their shooting skills. The basic shots are the Jump Shot, the Set Shot and the Lay Up Shot. Many feel that dunking is a shot but really it is not one of the basics and should not be taught until the other shots are mastered.
It is important to get children away from video games and exercising. Basketball is one of the best sports to get kids active. Learning the fundamentals is important if they are to be successful at the game. It is not difficult to teach basketball to kids as long as you remind them that it is a team sport and that they need to work together to win games.
