Your throat feels funny and you have been blowing your nose and sneezing all day. You’re not feeling that bad right now but you know the unmistakable signs of things to come. What can you do? Is there any way to fight this alien bug that landed in your body and is attempting to take it over? Yes there is!
I used to think you just had to succumb to the cold and ride it out but I have tried many of these remedies and have felt better by the next day.
Here is my list of home remedies:
Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV)- This has worked for me through the years. ACV has a high acidity level and when you’re catching something it’s usually because your body is too alkaline so the ACV balances your immune system to fight any virus. It is also full of natural minerals and vitamins. Just take 1 or 2 tablespoons twice a day (three or four times a day if you can handle it). You can add that to some water and sip it or just take it straight by the spoonful but if you do take it straight just make sure you drink a full cup of water after. If you absolutely cannot handle drinking it try dressing a salad with some ACV and oil.
Drink hot fluids- Herbal teas, broths, even some ginger steeped in hot water soothes the throat and moves the mucous along.
Drink cold fluids- The idea here is flushing your system so if hot fluids aren’t your thing then go with cold. Just make sure you drink and stay hydrated.
Honey/Lemon- Mix the juice of a whole lemon and a teaspoon of honey with about 4 ounces of hot water and sip slowly until it’s gone. This soothes a sore throat and has vitamin C and not to mention the many health benefits from the honey.
Saline spray/Nedi pot- This flushes out your sinuses and moves the mucous so you don’t feel as stuffed up.
Vitamin B Drops- These are sublingual so they get into your system faster and helps boost your immune system.
Garlic Pills- Garlic is a natural antibiotic and the pills are a convenient way to get a big dose although eating lots of garlic is good too.
Multi Vitamins- Sometimes when you’re catching a cold you don’t feel like eating a lot so taking vitamins are a good way to make sure you’re immune system has everything it needs.
Cayenne Pepper Gargle- 1 tablespoon in 8 ounces of water and gargle every hour. This moves the mucous out of your throat.
Oil Pulling- Sesame or Sunflower oil mouth rinse- Make sure it is plain and cold pressed oil. This is surprisingly good for many illnesses. You just take about 1 tablespoon of oil in your mouth and swish it for a few minutes and spit it out. It takes out any toxic fluids in your system. If you don’t have Sesame or Sunflower oil then Extra Virgin Olive Oil should be alright too.
Chicken Soup- I think this is one of the original weapons in the cold prevention medicine bag. It tastes really good and soothes your sore throat and makes you feel good.
Humidifier- Sometimes your throat and sinuses need some extra lubrication to keep your system flowing and a humidifier definitely helps.
Castor oil pack- If your throat is sore, make a pack out of some flannel cloth and pour some castor oil on it. Place the pack over your throat and leave it on for about an hour. If you’re getting a chest cold then place the pack on your chest.
Zinc and Echinacea- You can get these in the form of cough drops and they are also supposed to stop or shorten a cold.
Hopefully one or more of these home remedies will help in keeping you well. You don’t have to feel defenseless anymore!
