If you are planning a little girls birthday party, Halloween costume, or club wear you might consider making fairy wings using upcycled items. They turn out just as beautiful as their store bought counter parts but are one of a kind!
Metal Hangers (two for each pair of wings)
Old Pantyhose or thigh-highs
Hot glue gun
Leftover floral wire or bag twist ties
Spray paint ( in various colors)
Any other trinkets that can be hot glue to something else
How to Make Fairy Wings using Upcycled Items: Frame
Bend the middle part of the hanger by pulling it downward. See how it creates a diamond shape? You can push and pull to make divots in the metal to create different looks. Sculpt two hangers until you get a shape you like that is mirrored by the other hanger. You will want to take the “hook” part and straighten it out while leaving the “twists” alone. You will attach the two hangers together later once the material is added.

Cut a pair of pantyhose legs from the panty top. Gently pull the leg material onto the wing part of the frame. I have found it best if you roll the material down before beginning. Once you get the material up each frame side you will want to tie it off to the “hook” using floral wire or twist ties. Using pliers twist the two “hook” parts together to create the full wing frame.

You will want to find a workspace outside and cover it in newspapers. If its windy use rocks to hold paper in place. Spray a base color on each wing side. You will want the colors to be basically the same on both. If you are planning on doing multiple colors do the light colors first. I like to use vibrant purples and blues to paint wings and glitter coat to finish. This part will take several coats depending and a clear finishing coat.
How to Make Fairy Wings using Upcycled Items: Decorating
This is the fun part of making Fairy Wings. Once the wings are dry on both sides you can hot glue gems, flowers, charms, fake leaves and anything else to create a one-of-a-kind piece! Before covering the ugly wire frame make sure you attach elastic straps big enough to fit your arms for the harness. You can then hot glue flowers to cover the unsightly wire and complete your wings. If you want to create “Tattered Dark Fairy” wings burn random holes in the pantyhose to give them an “injured” look.
