So, you like to carry around your dog but it gets a little monotonous. You have to set the puppy down to open your purse, or to do other things, because you can’t carry the dog in your arms and still function completely. What you need is a puppy purse! It’s name can be deceiving. It’s not a bag that looks like a dog or features puppies on it. And, it’s not a purse you can stuff your dog into like you do make-up, tissues and other items. This purse is just for your puppy and lets you carry the little guy in an over-the-shoulder arrangement that’s helpful and adorable!
There are different materials you can use to make the puppy purse. If it’s a small dog you can simply use a bandana to make the carrier. But, if the dog is a little bigger – and this craft is not appropriate for anything but small dogs – you can simply cut a piece of fabric to the size you need. If you cut the material, hem it all the way around. However, if you use something like canvas there’s no need to hem the cloth.
Create a hole in each of the four corners of the bandana or other material. Keep the hole an inch or more away from either of the edges. If the fabric is thick – canvas, denim or similar types just make the holes by using scissors to clip a piece out of each corner. If the material is lightweight – like a bandana or a piece of a sheet you’ll need to make it sturdier. Cut a small square of additional fabric or felt and sew it to one of the corners, on the backside. Do this to all four corners. Now, create the hole by cutting through both pieces.
You’ll need two straps to hold the dog. These can be made by purchasing wide ribbon or strap material. Sew on a lanyard to each end of each strap and use these to connect to the bandana. Or, use metal rings to attach the straps to the puppy purse. To do this, cut a hole at each end of each ribbon piece. Sturdy up thin fabric with an additional piece sewn on the back of each end of the ribbons.
Purchase a grommet kit at a craft store or place that sells fabric. Follow the directions on the package to easily add a grommet to each hole of the bandana. Add another grommet onto the holes of the ribbon or straps.
Use a chain link to attach one strap to one side of the bandana and another link to attach the two other sides of the bandana to the second strap. Open the link, place it through the grommet of the ribbon and the grommet of the bandana, then clamp it shut. Do this to all four corners. One strap should carry one side of the bandana while the other strap is attached to the opposite side.
Set your dog on the carrier and pick it up like you would a purse. Slide the purse straps over your shoulder and you’re ready to go! Your dog will love tagging along with you and you’ll love how much more comfortable it is to take him everywhere you go!
