So you want to create a website for your business. This can be a very simple process and doesn’t have to be expensive or complicated. Many domain registry services or hosting companies offer complete services, with very user friendly, do-it-yourself features. We use godaddy.com for our stuff, they offer a lot of services for low prices.
I will say I did have a big problem with them, someone hacked into our master account, and pointed all 30 of our domain names to a malware site in Eastern Europe. This is a danger when all your sites are linked like ours in one master account. Godaddy admitted they had the problem before, but did nothing for us, and really didn’t seem to care at all. They also refused to give us any information about the user who hacked into our account, even though they had IP information on the computer that was used. This could have helped us trace who hacked into our account.
Yahoo also offers all the same domain and hosting services, as does Network Solutions.
Here is a basic guide to what you need to get a website up and running:
First you need a name for your site, this is the address. Registering a domain name costs about $10.00 per year for the .com designation. You should also secure .net, .org and any other possible names so no other company can take them. Once you have this you are ready for the next step.
Now that you have a domain name, you have an address for people to follow, but where will they go? Hosting is placing your website on a dedicated computer, for people to access anytime from around the world. You can have a dedicated computer at your home or office to use, but your Internet connection must be fast enough to handle all the traffic and your provider must. You cannot normally use your desktop computer for this, you need a separate, dedicated computer set up as a server.
The easy was to have another company host your site. Either on a shared system or sitting on its own computer at their location. Basic shared hosting costs about $5.-$10. per month, an individual server starts at about $200. a month and goes up from there depending on the services you seek and the bandwidyth you need.
Now that you have an address and a computer server to host your site, you need to build it. This can be done simply through your hosting or domain company, also Yahoo and Google offer free services. You can also hire an outside company to design and build your website, and then you can maintain and update it.
