Once a year we pick a day to go to the mall and Christmas shop. I look forward to this day every year because we have so much fun. We arrive early in the morning before most shoppers are out and about. We start by getting a cinnamon roll and coffee from one of the sweet treat shops in the mall. These rolls are so delicious but they have so many calories. That’s okay though because I figure we are going to spend the day walking so if ever there’s a time to have a sweet roll it’s on this day.
While having our coffee we go over our Christmas lists and map out a plan for where we will go first. Usually this plan never works though because by the time it’s all said and done we’ve been here, there and everywhere at least a few times so if you want to make a plan that’s good but beware that it will probably change a few times during the day.
Once I get to the perfume counter at each store it’s hard to pull me away. I have to try all the perfumes and I’m sure I smell quite unique going from store to store covered in perfume. I’m sure other shoppers think I’ve taken a bath in perfume by the time it’s all said and done.
As the day proceeds our packages get heavier and heavier. It’s good to bring a significant other with you so they can carry the bags. Remember you are busy shopping! At some point you may have to get a locker or maybe two to put your shopping bags in. This will usually take place before lunch because you don’t want to have to carry all the bags to the lunch area in the mall. Don’t worry about safety with the lockers because I use them every year and I find them to be very safe. I’ve never had a problem. I don’t like to take the packages to the car because I’m afraid as soon as I leave the car someone that may have been watching will break into the car and steal all the packages. Better to be safe than sorry so just use the mall lockers. Remember you’ve worked hard finding just the right gifts and you don’t want anything to ruin your hard work.
By now you’ve worked up quite an appetite and walked off the cinnamon roll from the early morning. The mall cafeterias are the best! There is all kinds of food to pick from including chinese, greek, american and even Mcdonalds if that’s what you really want. I love chinese food so I always pick the chinese food but everyone has a choice and can pick whatever type of food they want. It’s really best to arrive at the restaurant around 11:00 because these cafeterias fill up fast at lunch time and you will get a really good table if you are early. Take your time eating because you can also use this time as a rest time. Remember you’ve still got the whole afternoon to shop. When you have finished eating and feel rested. Resume your Christmas shopping. Your Christmas lists should be getting smaller by this time so you can take a little extra time looking at the decorations at the mall. This is my favorite part. I love seeing Santa and the elves and all the decorations. At the mall near our house they always put up a huge Christmas tree that just about reaches the ceiling. They have enormous bulbs on them and small ones to. I like to just stand there and enjoy the beauty of the tree. I always wonder how they get this big tree decorated. It must take a few people and a lot of work to accomplish it.
Malls usually have fountains and it’s fun to stop and throw a penny in and make a wish. Make it a good wish because you never know it just might come true.
By this time you will be starting to slow down a little and you’ll be getting just a touch tired. I usually go in the candle stores about now because they seem to revive me and give me an extra boost. I love the candle stores. It smells so good in there and I never leave the store without at least one gift for me. I know it’s Christmas and I’m supposed to be shopping for others but I’m sorry I love candles. Don’t get me wrong I do buy candles for others too but I’m always extra happy with the candle that I’ve chosen for me.
Next is usually the gadget store that has a little bit of everything. Sometimes I get lucky and find a special present for someone on my list but usually I spend a lot of time trying out all the new gadgets and making mental notes for things that I want and sometimes need too.
I start getting really tired somewhere around 3:00 and I know my day of shopping will be coming to a close soon.
My feet hurt and I will start feeling like I need a serious nap! I stop at a couple more stores just for a quick look through and then we head back to the lockers to get our packages. No matter where we are in the mall the lockers will be at the other end. This happens every year without fail. We make it to the lockers and get our packages and then discover we are parked at the opposite end of the mall! Seriously this is true. You’d think we would have learned but no it’s always like this. When you plan your day make sure to heed my warning and plan for where you are parked and where you will have to walk to when you leave the mall.
By now I’m so tired I don’t think I can walk another step but I drag myself along with all my bags and finally make it to the door. What do I discover you ask? I’ll tell you what it’s usually a blizzard. Every year it’s the same thing. I don’t care if we listened to the weather before venturing out and there was no forecast of snow. As soon as I begin shopping the snow begins coming down. Now we have to walk through blinding snow to make it to the car that’s usually parked a mile away! We find the car after looking for awhile because everyone’s car looks the same in the middle of a blizzard. We load the car and everyone piles in for the ride home. We are totally exhausted and I for one always think I’ll never be able to move again. When we get home I’m too tired to unload the car and lets not mention all the presents that will need wrapped but first things are first and I have to take a seriously needed nap.
When it’s all said and done I wouldn’t trade a minute of our once a year Christmas shopping event at the mall.
I hope you get a chance during this holiday season to spend a day at the mall. Merry Christmas!
