Having a movie-themed holiday party is festive, memorable, and can be a lot of fun. Here are some ideas for throwing a “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” cocktail party for kids and adults. (This is also a fun idea for December birthdays!)
Get very sturdy red construction paper or card stock and cut out red, stocking hats. Get cotton balls and take wisps to make the fringe around the bottom of the hat and for the pompom at the top/end. You don’t want the cotton to be too big so you can fit it an envelop to send. Write your info, time, place, what kind of party, costumes if you go that direction, and RSVP on the hat and send out.
Lucky for you it is a Christmas party, so you can decorate accordingly. However, add some ideas from the movie or book such as white wreathes with huge white bows or red bows, hang red and white stockings that look more like socks about the house, find fake, skinny trees that were stolen up the chimney, and if you have a nice dog you could put the big antlers on him. You can also decorates in all shades of green to highlight the Grinch, and place different sized hearts (paper hearts, stuffed hearts, pillow hearts, candy hearts etc…) all over the house.
If you go that route, there are plenty to choose from too – you could be the dog with the antlers, or sweet Cindy Lou. Sorry about the Seussian rhyme, I could not help myself! Being the Grinch is great, find some green make-up and paint your face. Any of the Who’s from Whoville make a great costume as well.
You must have a huge “Roast Beast.” For serving, have a roast beef cut up and placed on small pieces of cocktail bread. Strings of popcorn and candy canes (for kids and adults alike) can be placed so they can be eaten. Or, you can stick with your red and white theme for plates and cups as well as food if you like. Or use the Grinch’s green theme and have food such as pea pods and green goddess dip or green jello with whipped cream.
The Seussian cups are always large and clumpy and big, so find cups like that for cocktails or drinks for the kids. Make a red punch (with or without alcohol.) You can also go “green” for the Grinch and have green juice or cocktails such as Melon aperitifs.
If friends bring gifts to this party, have a sleigh if you can like the one Max the dog pulled with a red, Santa bag on it to place gifts in. Even just having the red Santa bag by the door for the Grinch to put in his sack is great.
Enjoy and Merry Christmas!
