Overcoming an addiction to Diet Coke or regular sodas with high fructose corn syrup is not easy. I’ve been there.
A lot of people wonder, “Can Diet Soda make you fat?” Maybe they wonder because the more diet soda they drink, the fatter they get!
Most dieters now know drinking diet soda that contains artificial sweeteners will not help you lose weight. In fact, experts say you may even end up gaining weight while drinking diet soda because your brain receives mixed signals.
Drinking regular sodas that contain high fructose corn syrup or even regular sugar is not much better. You still raise your blood sugar levels, which increases appetite.
Here are four sneaky ways to ditch the soda habit and lose weight. It’s hard to break an addiction to Diet Coke or your favorite diet soda, but it can be done.
Give up your trigger foods
Most people have “trigger foods” that increase their cravings for diet soda. At least temporarily give up certain foods such as pizza if you always need to have a soda while you eat pizza. One thing that worked for me is to create a health food option for the junk foods that often go well with soda. For example, it’s hard to want a Diet Coke when you are eating a healthful Ezekiel tortilla pizza covered with organic cheese and veggies.
Choose a healthier go-to drink
Instead of always going to your favorite soda, choose a new go-to drink. When I first gave up soda pop, I switched to black tea. Now I realize black tea with caffeine was not the best choice for me, even though it did help me give up soda. I now drink Raspberry Leaf tea for weight loss. The tea has no caffeine. Also, I love to add fresh mint from the garden. Experts say the smell of mint can actually decrease your appetite, making it a super alternative to diet soda.
Consider natural sodas
Some people just can’t give up soda cold turkey. If you are having trouble, consider drinking Hansen Free or Zevia with the natural stevia plant sweetener. Another option is to make low-calorie spritzers using seltzer water or sparkling water and real fruit juice such as grapefruit juice, another powerful weight loss aid. Experts say stevia can actually improve your blood sugar levels, which means you will be less hungry.
Carry around a water bottle
Although it sounds simple, carrying around a water bottle may help you overcome your addiction to Diet Coke. Carrying around a water bottle keeps your hands occupied. Also, find a water bottle that you enjoy drinking out of. The sensation of sipping something will replace the constant desire to drink soda. Add a squirt of lemon or lime to your water.
You can get over an addiction to Diet Coke. Breaking your addiction to soda pop is important. Remind yourself why you are doing it. People who drink diet soda are much more likely to be heavy and drinking sodas (diet or regular) increases your appetite.
It’s so much easier to stay on a diet when you feel healthier. Drinking healthful teas and plenty of water or real juice will keep you energized. Stay away from your trigger foods for at least 90 days. Then slowly incorporate them back into your diet, if desired, by pairing the foods with your healthier tea or water beverage.
