The commonwealth of Virginia has a state Board for Barbers and Cosmetology that issues licenses to the state’s cosmetologists. License applicants first need to complete certain training or experience requirements (such as an apprenticeship or cosmetology school). After completing their training, applicants then move on to take a two-part exam that tests cosmetology theory and practical hands-on skills. Those who meet the educational and testing requirements can get a Virginia cosmetology license to work in salons.
Meet the educational or experience requirements. These are your options:
a. Complete a course at a school of cosmetology. There are also some public school cosmetology programs and state-sponsored institutional programs;
b. 1500 hours of cosmetology training in a U.S. school that is essentially the same as the approved Virginia cosmetologist program;
c. Completion of a substantially equivalent course that is less than 1500 hours plus six months of work experience;
d. Completion of a Virginia apprenticeship program; or
e. Two years of cosmetology experience in the U.S. military.
Once you have qualified, then you fill out an exam and license application and can also get a temporary permit to work under the supervision of a licensed Virginia cosmetologist. Look in the Resources below to get links to these forms. As of 2010, when you apply for both required portions of the exam, the fee is $155.
You need to pay the exam administrator instead of the board for this step. Make out a cashier’s check or money order to “Professional Credential Services, Inc.” You may also submit credit card details when you submit the application. Submit the Virginia cosmetology exam application to the following address:
Professional Credential Services, Inc.
