The Hawaii Board of Barbering and Cosmetology issues licenses to the state’s cosmetologists. The general requirements for a license include training and testing. An applicant can either attend a cosmetology school or complete an apprenticeship. He then must pass a written and practical exam to get a license. Out-of-state applicants with a current license can also sometimes get a waiver of the requirements and transfer their license to become a Hawaii cosmetologist.
Accumulate the necessary training to get a license. If you are taking a cosmetology school course, you must complete 1800 hours. But if you are doing a cosmetologist apprenticeship, you must complete 3600 hours. You may also combine these hours by counting one school hour for every two apprentice hours. Use the apprentice application when starting an apprenticeship (see Resources). There is a $45 fee for apprentice applications.
Note on Licenses By Endorsement:
The general rule on getting a Hawaii cosmetology license by endorsement is that you need a current license from another state plus one year of experience as a cosmetologist.
Access the exam candidate guide. You can find this “Candidate Information Bulletin” online by looking in the Resources below. Use this bulletin to find study references and exam outlines for preparing for the test.
