The state of Georgia has a statewide license for cosmetologists. Some applicants qualify for a license by working as an apprentice under a licensed master cosmetologist. Others take the route of completing a Georgia cosmetology school. Regardless of the choice of training, an applicant must also take and pass a Georgia cosmetology exam to get a state license.
If you have someone to act as your master for an apprentice cosmetology program, then you need to register as an apprentice before starting your training. You can download the apprentice application by looking in the Sources below. You must complete at least 3000 hours of hands-on training as an apprentice over a period of at least 18 months. As of 2010, the fee to become a Georgia cosmetology apprentice is $45. See below for additional payment instructions.
If you have no plan for doing an apprenticeship, you can still qualify to become a Georgia cosmetologist by completing a Georgia cosmetology school program. In Georgia, credit is not given for out-of-state schools. So make sure you attend a Georgia school if you are choosing this method.
