How to Effectively Deal with Criticism

by tree pony

Whether it’s from a co-worker, your boss, a friend or anyone.. It can be difficult to deal with negative comments. Everyone handles criticism differently, some take it to heart and let it really get to them, others just let it go through one ear and out the other, not letting it effect them at all.

Many people will try to hide their feelings when someone has criticized them, and that’s normal. If you have to deal with a great amount of negative comments in your line of work or you it just seems that people criticize you a lot, than it’s important that you learn how to effectively deal with it.

Think about it.
Many people, when criticized, don’t actually listen to what someone is saying. They just hear the bad thing that is being said and get angry. Before you yell or get up and walk away, take the time to listen to what they are really saying to see if it’s actually useful.

Don’t let it get to you.
This is important. If you take all the criticism you get to heart than you’re not going to be able to ever get a good understand of who you really are. You’ll start to think very bad of yourself, and that’s never a good thing. So, you can’t take every bad thing that someone says to you personally. This is much easier said than done but you don’t have to let it all get to you so much.

It’s understandable that when someone gives you bad feedback on something you’ve done than it feels like they are talking bad about who you are but you can’t allow yourself to feel that way.

What are they really criticizing?
Are they saying something bad about you yourself or something you’ve made such as a new recipe? It’s important that you understand that it’s not you they are they are criticizing, it’s the work you’ve done. If it is something about you that is getting a negative comment, than let it go and move on. You know who you are and if you like who you are than forget what they’ve said. But again, take the criticism as a way to improve your work, maybe it could really help you.

Think before you respond.
Before you decide to say something back to the person who is giving you criticism, take a while to really think about it, you could say something that you’ll regret. Are they right or does there negative comment mean nothing? You could end up saying something wrong and than later think about it and find out they were right to say it in the first place. So take some time to really think about whether or not they are right and than give them a respond to their criticism.
