An electrical contractor can install and repair various kinds of equipment that involves electrical wiring. Some states have state-level electrician licenses, but Pennsylvania does not have a statewide electrician license. On the other hand, each city or county in Pennsylvania can require an electrical contractor license.
Pittsburgh’s Bureau of Building Inspection requires a license for several types of Pittsburgh contractors. This agency has a specific licensing scheme for anyone who does electrician (electrical contracting) work. Requirements include experience, an exam and liability insurance.
The city of Pittsburgh, like most places, will require you to be 18 before you can get something like an electrician license. You also need to be able to speak and read English to become a licensed Pittsburgh electrician.
You need either work experience or a combination of electrician education and experience to get an electrical contractor license from the Bureau of Building Inspection. Without any school, you will need 10 years of experience. But if you have graduated from an electrician course, then you need only two years of experience. The school must be accredited. This is a very broad term, so always check with the bureau before enrolling at a school for electrical engineering or electricians to make sure it will be acceptable. The number is 412-255-2175.

Take your exam to become a Pittsburgh electrician. However, not all individuals who pass will be able to get a Pittsburgh electrical contractor license. The reason is that you must now get liability insurance in the amount of $300,000. This will naturally require you to present some level of proof of financial responsibility to an insurance company.
Register your business and to pay city taxes. Call 412-255-2528. You will receive a tax ID number.
Go to Room 320 at 200 Ross Street with your application, a license fee and all supporting documentation. Call 412-255-2175 before going to apply for your electrician license so you can prepare your Pittsburgh license fees.
