To everybody, I’m just another college student who takes it easy with life. But as I unlock the door to my room, my fingers shake with excitement as I anticipate another great evening fighting others and looting treasures with my clan. Such is the effect of the MMORPG RuneScape, a medieval fantasy online game which I first discovered in high school. Now, a few years later, RuneScape has seamlessly blended into my life so much that I cannot imagine going through a day without logging on to the familiar home screen, wondering what lies in store for me in this popular game.
RPG games have never grabbed my interest, but RuneScape is another story altogether. I first came to know about it through my younger cousins, who play it day and night. Deeming it a children’s game, it was only with mild interest and the persuasion of my cousins that I made an account. Within the first hour, I realized that I was too interested in the game to even stop and eat my dinner. Gradually, I found friends and peers who had also taken interest in the game, and I realized that RuneScape was not a mere children’s game, but an MMORPG to be enjoyed by people of all interests.
Now, I recall those days with a nostalgic memory, as RuneScape has become more than an everyday pastime to me. Developing the in-game skills, earning money, completing challenging quests, and undertaking life in another world is greatly appealing to me. The desire to escape the harsh realities of the modern world and dive into another realm seems a fantasy to most, yet they do not realize that this is exactly what RuneScape is. Now, when I come home from another challenging day of arduous studies, my first thought to relieve stress is to play an hour or two of this original, likeable game.
After all, what’s not to like? In spite of trying not to write a script for a corny promotional video, I cannot help but describe RuneScape’s various skills in which I have spent a countless number of hours training, its vast terrain that holds a multitude of different activities, and the dozens of original, mind-boggling quests I have completed. Perhaps it is the freedom I hold that is most pleasing-from the moment I log on, I can do absolutely anything I want, from fishing to hunting to fighting other monsters and players.
It is not without reason that RuneScape is the biggest MMORPG in the world, with over 156 million registered account and 10 million active accounts. Jagex has made a game that has not only defined the modern MMORPG, but revolutionized the age of gaming. RuneScape has come much more than a normal pastime but an everyday activity that relives stress and encourages friendly competition for people of all ages.
