On March 7, 2011, CBS announced it’s hit comedy, “How I Met Your Mother,” will be renewed two more seasons, according to the “How I Met Your Mother” Community Message Board on CBS.com. For the show’s devoted fans, this announcement is ‘legendary,’ to put it in familiar terms. But what does this renewal mean for the show?
Does the fact that the show was renewed two more seasons mean that loyal fans will have to wait two more years to find out who the mother is? (And what if the show continues for more seasons, after that?) Remember, being that the show is set in ‘real time’ – currently 2011 – Ted is eventually going to have to meet the mother soon, if he has two teenage children by the year 2030.
Lily and Marshall’s Pregnancy
According to a recent flash-forward moment, we saw through an interaction with Lily and Barney that Lily was going to be pregnant in the coming future. Does this mean, two seasons from now, there’s going to be a toddler joining the booth at MacLaren’s?
Ted has stated in numerous episodes that he is going to meet the future mother at a wedding, where he stands in as best man. However, there are at least four possible marriages that could take place in the next two seasons, in which Ted could “best man” up:
1. Barney and Nora tie the knot (Something big is happening between them, we just can’t wait to see where it goes).
2. Ted has already agreed to perform the best man duties to his high school friend back in Ohio, “Punchy.”
3. Perhaps Ted’s Dad, Alfred Mosby, gets re-married.
4. Marshall is always telling Robin that she’s going to meet a man at any minute, fall head over heels in love, and be married before you know it. Perhaps the news thing doesn’t work out for Don in Chicago and he moves back to New York and proposes to Robin. Or, alternatively, she meets someone new, and they have a shotgun wedding.
Regardless, these four scenarios could all happen in the next two renewed seasons, and Ted could be the best man at each one of them.
All signs point to Marshall Eriksen quitting his job as an attorney, and either working at the NRDC, becoming re-unemployed, or starting his own law firm to help save the world.
“How I Met Your Mother” fans saw at the recent funeral for Marshall’s dad that Barney called his mother, asking her to help him contact his long-lost dad. What will the next two renewed seasons hold for Barney? Perhaps Barney is in for some big changes, between a possible marriage, and reuniting with his father.
