Inversion therapy is sometimes used as a method of treating back pain, and works by relieving pressure that gravity tends to place on the spine. Inversion machines can be tilted backward, turning the back pain sufferer upside down to a set degree, thereby reducing compression on the spine.
Inversion machines work by increasing separation between the discs of the spine, which leads to relief from back pain. It has also been suggested that inversion machines can help maintain your height, by avoiding the shrinkage that happens over time as gravity contracts your spine.
Place your inversion machine in a location that has enough room for the table to move easily. Assign another adult to be your assistant while you use the table.
Adjust the height setting on the inversion machine to suit your height. You may need to check the user’s manual of your particular machine, in order to make sure you do so correctly.
Set the desired angle on your machine. Usually, this is no more than 30 to 40-degrees. Once you are accustomed to this angle, you can adjust it deeper if you prefer.
Step on to the foot plates of the inversion machine, and tighten the straps around your ankles. Then, grasp the handles on the sides of the table, to help maintain your balance. With your assistant close by, begin to lean backward on the machine. This should cause the table to begin to tilt backward.
Continue leaning backward and allowing the machine to tilt, until you have reached your programmed angle setting. Relax in this position for five to 15-minutes.
Grasp the handles on the sides of the table when you are ready to return to the upright position. Use leverage on the handles to rotate the table. You may decide to request help from your assistant to return right-side up.
Use your inversion table twice per day, or as often as is recommended by your doctor or chiropractor.
To avoid injury, you should read the instruction manual of your particular inversion machine, and follow these directions carefully.
Those suffering from high blood pressure, heart disease or certain eye conditions should only use an inversion table under approval from their doctors.
Inversion tables typically cost between $100 and $600.
