There has been a lot of talk about the new series, House of Anubis, which premiered on Nickelodeon January 1st. The show is a British comedy/mystery series that follows the lives of eight teenagers who attend a boarding school called Anubis House, which was named after the Egyptian god Anubis. The boarding school is in an old house which was built in the early 1900’s and has plenty of secrets and surprises hidden inside.
I have heard some people compare the show to Harry Potter, but I really don’t think there is much comparison. The acting, quality and plot of the Harry Potter movies is far superior to the House of Anubis tv drama. So don’t expect to be wowed with the show like you would be by a top-notch movie. However, the Nickelodeon show does quickly catch your interest.
Here is a quick summary of the plot so far:
The main character in the show is Nina, who is actually an American. At the time that Nina moved into Anubis House, another student, Joy, mysteriously disappeared. You can tell that Joy’s disappearance is suspicious, especially from the way that the teachers and school staff constantly try to cover up what really happened. Joy’s best friend and roommate, Patricia, knows that something bad must have happened to Joy, so she blames Nina, simply because Nina showed up at the same time that Joy left and Nina took Joy’s place as Patricia’s roommate.
When Nina meets an old lady who appears to be crazy, she receives a locket with the same strange Egyptian symbol that is hidden all over Anubis House. The old lady tells Nina that there is treasure in the house, but she must not let anyone else get it. Later, Nina finds out that the necklace opens a secret door in the attic, where Nina finds a strange old picture that matches the photo of a girl inside the locket (who bears a strange resemblance to Nina herself). On the back of the picture frame are hieroglyphics, which Nina decodes with an Egyptian book she found in the attic. The hieroglyphics give away the location of a secret key, which may hold the answer to where the treasure is located.
The other students in the school include Fabian (who befriends Nina and tries to help her figure out the mysteries that Anubis House hides), Amber (an annoying girl who thinks she is the next Victoria Beckham), Mick (Amber’s not-so-smart boyfriend), Mara (Amber’s long-suffering best friend), Alfie (the clown of the school, and the token black guy) and Jerome (a real jerk who likes to mess with people). These are the characters that provide most of the humor in the series.
The acting in the show is so-so. Some of the lines and character expressions are a little over-the-top, but it’s still an engrossing show. The stars of the show include, Nathalia Ramos (Nina), Brad Kavanagh (Fabian), Ana Mulvoy Ten (Amber), Jade Ramsey (Patricia), Bobby Lockwood (Mick), Tasie Dhanraj (Mara), Alex Sawyer (Alfie), Eugene Simon (Jerome) and Klariza Clayton (Joy). In my opinion, Nathalia, Brad, Jade and Tasie are probably the most decent actors and actresses of the bunch, but many people would probably disagree.
If you haven’t seen the show yet, Nickelodeon will be showing all new episodes this week at 7 pm. I’m sure they will be replaying the first two episodes sometime soon as well, so keep an eye out for that!
