REVIEW: THE ROYAL KONA HOTEL.

On a recent trip to the Big Island I had the pleasure of staying at the Royal Kona Hotel. This is an older property built in 1968. When it was built its unique architectural design was special. Built on the Kona ocean front, this property offers fantastic views of the Pacific Ocean . A fantastic sunset viewing is a nightly happening. From the moment you arrive, you are greeted with traditional Hawaiian charm. A pleasant “Aloha” greets you from all staff members. This hotel offers a unique outdoor lobby and check-in area.
Our room was on the fourth floor of this seven story hotel. Although we purchased a partial ocean view room, the view was spectacular; in my opinion this room was a lot closer to an ocean front than ocean view. The room was a comfortable size for the two of us. Table and chairs, refrigerator, and hair dryer are provided. The bathroom was a good size but the lighting was somewhat dark. The room comes with a balcony with sliding glass door. The crashing of the ocean waves could be heard each night. My only objection is the rooms seem kind of dark due to dull colored paint.
The grounds of the Royal Kona are kept immaculate. I did not see one piece of trash the entire length of my stay. Upon entering the grounds, you are greeted with fish ponds containing large coy fish. The swimming pool is not large but seemed more than sufficient for the number of people using it. A bar is located next to the pool. The service was a little slow, but the views of the Pacific are grand! A shallow salt water pond is located at the south end of the property be sure to use it. You will see tropical fish! Overall, the grounds at the Royal Kona are very nice and enhance your Big Island visit.
The Royal Kona has a nice outdoor (Don the Beachcomber) restaurant with many food choices. I did not try it as I thought it was a bit pricey. Other choices in town within walking distance of The Royal Kona are excellent options.. The outdoor bar (Don’s Mai Tai Bar) serves great tropical drinks with wonderful ocean views.
In general I would recommend the Royal Kona. Remember that it is an older property, but I think this adds to its charm. The rooms were priced very well and it is very close to the shops and restaurants in town.
