A good friend of mine is an ice cream fanatic. Between him and his girlfriend, they often have more than half a dozen varieties of ice cream in their freezer. While visiting them a couple of days ago, my friend took a container of Hood Light Butter Pecan Ice Cream out of the freezer and told me that it is his new favorite variety.
He asked me if I wanted to try this product and I replied in the affirmative. This tasty light ice cream offers less fat and calories than regular style butter pecan ice cream, but I noticed little, if any difference in flavor and texture when I ate a bowl of it.
I am so impressed with this item, that I have decided to write a review of it. Presented here, in an effort to assist the consumer, is one food writer’s product review of Hood Light Butter Pecan Ice Cream.
The net weight of the standard sized container of Hood Light Butter Pecan Ice Cream is 48 ounces. The container holds approximately fourteen 0.5 cup servings. As with many other food products, I think that the serving size is under estimated. The bowl of this ice cream that I ate contained at least one cup, which was just the right amount to satisfy my appetite and sweet cravings.
The regular retail price charged for one 48 ounce container of Hood Light Butter Pecan Ice Cream at Hartford, Connecticut area supermarkets is approximately $3.59. That works out to roughly $0.25c per serving, which I think is quite reasonable. My friend told me that he purchased this ice cream when it was on sale and the price that he paid for one 48 ounce container was $3.
It is nice to discover healthier, low fat versions of food products that offer tastes and textures that are similar to regular style versions of the product. Such is the case with Hood Light Butter Pecan Ice Cream. When my friend asked me if I wanted some butter pecan ice cream, he didn’t mention that the ice cream was a ‘light’ product that was low in fat. It wasn’t until I was halfway through eating the product that he told me it was a ‘light’ product.
To be honest, I could not detect any real difference in the flavor or texture of this ice cream from regular style butter pecan ice cream. It possesses a rich and creamy texture that feels great on the tongue and does not seem lacking in any positive attributes. The pieces of real pecans that populate this ice cream also add another dimension of texture.

Taste / Flavor
When it comes to taste, Hood Light Butter Pecan Ice Cream really shines. As mentioned above, I really couldn’t detect any difference in flavor between this item and regular style butter pecan ice cream. As soon as I ate the first spoonful, I could taste the flavors of buttermilk and pecans.
The beigeish ice cream is studded throughout with good sized pieces of real pecans and the product is not overly sweet. On a flavor scale of one through ten, I would assign Hood Light Butter Pecan Ice Cream a rating of nine.
