At Christmas time or any time of the year, it is always fun for children to give gifts to those they love. Gift giving means so much more to the recipient if the child has made the gift by themselves. This year, help your children make picture frames for their friends and family members.
For each frame, you will need:
A picture of the child
Two pieces of heavy cardboard-cereal boxes work great for this
An old puzzle with small pieces
Red and green paint for the puzzle pieces
Gold paint for the picture frame
Newspaper to cover your work area
To make your frame:
To begin, paint the puzzle pieces on one side. Paint a few more than you think you will need to cover the picture frame. Paint half of them green and the other half red. Note: This is a good opportunity to work on math skills with your child.
Lay the puzzle pieces out on the newspaper. Before sprinkling the glitter, make sure the cover of paint is heavy enough to allow the glitter to stick. Now sprinkle the glitter onto your puzzle pieces, and allow them to dry completely.
While the puzzle pieces are drying, place the picture you are going to use on the piece of cardboard.
Trace around the picture.
Now cut out your frame at least one inch larger than the picture you are using. Use the craft knife (parents only please) to cut out a space in the cardboard for your picture to show through. Use the lines you made when you traced the picture, as your guide. You will want to cut your space about ¼ to ½ inch smaller than the size of the picture.
Place your frame on the other piece of cardboard, and trace around it. Cut out this piece. This is going to be the back of your frame.
Now glue the two pieces of cardboard together. Be careful to spread the glue only around the very edges of the pieces of cardboard. You will need to leave room to slip your picture into your frame when you are finished.
Now paint the front of your picture frame with the gold paint. Allow it to dry.
Flip the frame over, and paint the back.
Allow the back to dry.
Find the best arrangement for the puzzle pieces, by placing them onto the frame before gluing them down. When you are satisfied, begin gluing the pieces onto your frame.
Allow the frame to dry.
Slide your picture into the frame.
