On-and-off-again celebrity couple Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt have surprising news. Pratt has a new music career as a rapper and Montag might have a career as a singer, if everything goes her way. The couple that is famous for being famous might actually have marketable skills. Who knew?
Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt met as cast members on MTV’s The Hills, a reality show that ran from 2006 to 2010. They married, and later Montag filed for divorce but then withdrew the filing. Since then, they have been seen all over the place, generating media attention simply for being famous, much like Paris Hilton. [Source: Heidi Montag – Wikipedia. So I was surprised as anyone to learn that Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt might have actual, marketable skills. As noted above, they are both pursuing musical careers and Pratt, at least, has had some mild success. If all goes well, the two might actually be producing music that people want to pay money for. So are they officially productive members of society?
Maybe. But I suspect that a lot of the interest in their music is simply the result of their prior fame from reality television. Fans of The Hills will, of course, give Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt’s music a listen, regardless of whether it has any serious musicial and artistic merit.
Counterargument: But isn’t that true of most successful performers today? When you buy Brandon Flowers’ album, Flamingo, it is not because you think the music on Flamingo is good (you probably haven’t even heard it yet) – it is because you like The Killers music and you know Brandon Flowers as the lead singer of The Killers. Similarly, those of us who bought tickets to see Spider-Man 3 didn’t do it because we knew what the new movie would be like; we did it because Spider-Man 2 was one of the best comic book films ever made, and we thought Spider-Man 3 would be more of the same (which it sadly was not).
So when people buy Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt’s music (if they do), it might simply be because of their past satisfaction with Montag and Pratt the reality TV actors, and not because of any strong musical talent. And that’s all right, although I am not sure it will sustain musical careers for the two.
