We recently bought new furniture for our bedroom and discovered that the pictures we hung on the walls would have to be moved because of the dimensions of the new bedroom furniture. And, of course, because I hung them with screws, I would have to repair the holes and paint over them. Ugh!
Anyone who has ever repaired drywall with Spackle knows what a very messy and bothersome job this can be. It’s bad enough having to dust the house normally without intentionally making additional dust and dirt to clean up. If I wasn’t such a penny pincher I’d hire out for jobs like these! After finding out how to hang pictures without damaging the walls, now I won’t have to worry about that anymore.
I had a nice chat with Gina, the owner of The Furniture Warehouse , while she was helping to set up our new bedroom furniture. When I mentioned, with dismay, that I would have to rearrange my pictures and fix the holes where they were previously hung, she told me that she hangs all of her pictures with Velcro that doesn’t damage the walls or the paint.
On my next shopping trip to Wal-Mart I found 3M Command Brand™ damage-free hanging strips for picture and frame hanging. The packaging reads, “Holds Strongly ∙ Removes Cleanly”, and comes in packages for three different sized frames. I chose the one for the largest frame, which is 18 in x 24 in.
I wondered how I would match up the Velcro on the picture with the Velcro on the wall and still hang the picture so it was level. When I read the easy-to-follow instructions, I had my AHA moment.
First, you clean both surfaces with isopropyl rubbing alcohol and let them dry. Next you press two fastener strips together until you hear them snap. After removing the red liner that covers the adhesive on one of the two strips, you position the set on your frame and press firmly for 90 seconds. Repeat this procedure with additional sets of fastener strips until you achieve the recommended placement amount.
When all the fastener sets are adhered to the frame, you peel off the remaining red liners to expose the adhesive that will stick to the wall. Position your item on the wall and press each fastener set firmly for 30 seconds. I would suggest placing a small level on the top of your frame to make sure it will be straight. Grab the frame at the bottom to lift it away from the wall and peel it off the surface. Now you will have fastener strips on the frame and on the wall.
Press firmly on each of the wall strips for 90 seconds. Wait for 1 hour before mounting your frame on the wall. When the allotted time is up, press firmly on each strip until you hear it snap into place. No more damage from hanging pictures on your wall!
If you are working with freshly painted walls you have to wait a minimum of 7 days after painting to mount your pictures without causing damage. You must follow the instructions carefully for damage-free removal of the strips.
