Halo: Reach has been out for awhile now, but you are still probably working on all of the commendations. Yeah, those things take a pretty long time, no matter what you do to earn them. Before we jump start this guide for the Firefight Matchmaking Commendations, here are the rank progressions for your reference:
Oh, don’t forget that you MUST be playing Firefight Matchmaking (Firefight or Score Attack) in order to work on these commendations. Normal firefight mode will not do anything for you because it isn’t in Matchmaking, so don’t waste your time trying to do that.
Backup (Earn an assist in Firefight matchmaking)
For the Backup Commendation, all you have to do is get a ton of assists. To get an assist, you’ll just have to deal the majority of the damage to an enemy (a.k.a take out its shields), and let your teammate get the kill. It’s actually pretty difficult to get assists on purpose because it just gets so boring, so you should probably just play Firefight a lot to do this commendation. Unfortunately, the Backup Commendation maxes out at 8,000 assists. You are guaranteed to be going at this one for quite some time because assists aren’t too common in Firefight, especially a Rocket Fight. Obviously, you need to play with other people to do this, so your best bet is to simply play Firefight Matchmaking.
Dome Inspector (Kill an enemy with a headshot in Firefight matchmaking)
The Dome Inspector Commendation isn’t too hard to get, but it will take a lot of time. Oh, you’ll want to make sure that you are using a weapon that is capable of a headshot, so only use these weapons to do it:
* Needle Rifle
* Sniper Rifle
Unfortunately, this commendation maxes out at 20,000 headshots. There is an extremely simple way to work on this commendation though. Regularly, play a bunch of rounds of Score Attack and choose Gruntpocalypse. Every game, you will face just over 100 Grunts. Your main weapon in this mode is the DMR and the secondary weapon is the Pistol, so you’ll have no trouble pulling off some headshots this way.
Get Loud (Kill an enemy with a heavy weapon in Firefight matchmaking)
If you like explosions, then you will love getting this commendation. You need to use heavy weapons to destroy enemies, which will be no problem in Firefight Matchmaking. For reference, the following weapons are classified as heavy weapons:
* Fuel Rod Cannon
* Grenade Launcher
* Plasma Launcher
* Rocket Launcher
* Spartan Laser
* Target Locator
Luckily, this commendation isn’t too bad because it maxes out at 8,000 kills. The perfect mode exists in Firefight Matchmaking for a person to obtain this one: Rocket Fight. You will have 30 minutes to fight through three rounds of enemies, plus a bonus round. Therefore, nobody should have much trouble obtaining the Get Loud Commendation through enough games of Rocket Fight. You probably won’t find a quicker method for accomplishing it.
Grounded (Destroy an enemy-occupied vehicle in Firefight matchmaking)
Basically, you just need to destroy vehicles for this commendation – occupied vehicles. Some Firefight Matchmaking levels don’t have vehicles on them, so you’ll need to know which maps do have vehicles. For this commendation, you need to destroy a total of 12,000 vehicles to max it out, which is no simple task. Most levels with vehicles on them in the first place only have a few per game. Only a dedicated player is going to end up with this one.
Unfortunately, the commendation is even more difficult to obtain because you’ll normally be playing with other people. Score Attack is an option, but it gets pretty boring after a short period of time. For this commendation, you’ll want to play Rocket Fight or Sniper Fight at one of these maps:
In Command (Kill a Leader-class enemy in Firefight matchmaking)
For this commendation, the only Leader-class enemy is the Elite, which means you have to play a Firefight Matchmaking game or a Score Attack variant (minus Gruntpocalypse). You have to kill 10,000 Elites for In Command. Only a handful of Elites appear in any given Firefight Matchmaking game, so you’ll have to be quick when killing them or someone else will do it. Fortunately, you should be able to kill some Elites during each game. Your best shot is to play a game of Rocket Fight or Sniper Fight to take out Elites the quickest. You’ll also find greater numbers of them than in a game of Score Attack.
Longshot (Kill an enemy with a precision weapon in Firefight matchmaking)
Yes, the Longshot Commendation is the same for Campaign, Multiplayer, and Firefight. Just kill an enemy with one of the following weapons to work toward this commendation:
* Focus Rifle
* Needle Rifle
* Sniper Rifle
Sadly and horrifyingly, you’re going to need 32,000 precision weapon kills to max this one out. Luckily, there is a great method to use in order to get this commendation: Gruntpocalypse (a Score Attack variant). Play games of Gruntpocalypse at the map Holdout to gain plenty of precision weapon kills. You start this game type with a DMR and you can camp in the room you start at. Quickly, enemies will come in through the door right in front of you (and sometimes from the stairs). You just need to start shooting at them until they die, but you should go for headshots. Standing right next to the ammo stand will give you an unlimited supply of ammo for the entire game. Through this method, you can earn around 100 kills per game for the commendation.
Methodical (Earn a spree of any type in Firefight matchmaking)
For Firefight Matchmaking, all sprees involve killing an enemy repeatedly through the same method. The most common sprees you will find yourself earning throughout a Firefight match are:
* Killing Spree (and variants)
* Stick Spree (and variants)
* Shotgun Spree (and variants)
You can get most of the other sprees too, but they won’t be as common, depending upon the game type you are playing. Unfortunately, the Methodical Commendation maxes out at 10,000 sprees, which means that you will have to kill at least 50,000 enemies and earn sprees while doing so. However, you pretty much have free reign over what Firefight Matchmaking or Score Attack game type you want to do. Just pick a game type, play it, and earn some sprees!
Numbers Game (Earn a multikill in Firefight matchmaking)
The Numbers Game Commendation isn’t too difficult to work your way through. To get a multikill, you just need to kill two or more enemies within four seconds of each other. It’s that simple, and multikills do stack and count as multiple ones. For example, an overkill (four kills within four seconds of each other) counts as three multikills because it is a double kill, triple kill, and overkill. 15,000 multikills are required to max out the Numbers Game Commendation. You can pretty much play whatever Firefight Matchmaking or Score Attack game type that you are best at, but I have found that the Gruntpocalypse game type at Holdout works the best. Really though, just play anything in Firefight Matchmaking/Score Attack.
Perfectionist (Complete a round without dying in Firefight matchmaking)
Perfectionist is more annoying than anything else because the slightest mistake can get you killed during a Firefight match. In Halo: Reach, a round consists of five waves of enemies. You just need to survive an entire round without dying to work toward this commendation. Sadly, this isn’t as simple as it sounds. This might just be the most difficult commendation in the game because you need to go 8,000 deathless rounds to max out Perfectionist. No, it isn’t impossible, but it might be time consuming enough to destroy your social life for the rest of time. Your best bet to getting this commendation is to either play Rocket Fight and avoid getting into the middle of enemies or playing Gruntpocalype on Holdout and staying in the starting room that you spawn in.
Pull the Pin (Kill an enemy with grenades in Firefight matchmaking)
Okay, everyone knows that there are two types of grenades in this game: Plasma Grenades and Frag Grenades. Just kill an enemy with one of the two. 9,000 grenade kills are required to max out the Pull the Pin Commendation, which isn’t too horrible. Fortunately, you’ll always be able to use grenades against enemies and pick them up from them too. The best method to getting this one maxed out is to play Gruntpocalypse at Holdout. Each time you kill a Grunt, you can pick up a Plasma Grenade from their body. Just keeping throwing them out the door from inside the room you spawn in, and you’ll have this commendation finished up in no time.
Riflin’ Through (Kill an enemy with an automatic weapon in Firefight matchmaking)
For Riflin’ Through, you just need to use an automatic weapon to kill enemies. What counts as an automatic weapon? Well, the following weapons will help you earn this commendation:
* Assault Rifle
* Plasma Reapeater
* Plasma Rifle
It’s a pretty simple commendation, right? Wrong. In fact, it is one of the most difficult because you need to kill 32,000 enemies with automatic weapons in order to max it out. It’s going to take you quite a long time to finish this one, but it can be done – eventually. To get this one done, you’ll want to just play normal Firefight in Matchmaking or play normal Score Attack because you’ll be able to use the Assault Rifle. Stay away from large groups of enemies because it will be hard to kill them all with the Assault Rifle.
Specialized (Kill a specialist-class enemy in Firefight matchmaking)
What exactly counts as a specialist-class enemy? Well, the following enemies will count toward this commendation (it doesn’t matter what their actual class is):
* Hunters (possibly)
This commendation isn’t too bad, but you’ll have to play a lot to get the 14,000 kills required to max Specialized out. Unfortunately, Skirmishers are extremely annoying to kill, so you might just throw the controller at the T.V. eventually. Anyways, your best method to get this one is to play regular Score Attack or Rocket Fight in Matchmaking. Just shoot away at these three (or four) types of enemies in order to rank up through this commendation.
Target Practice (Kill an infantry-class enemy in Firefight matchmaking)
Grunts are the only infantry-class enemies in the game, so you’ll just want to kill them all. For Target Practice, you’ll need to kill 20,000 Grunts in Firefight Matchmaking. Your best bet to do this is to play Gruntpocalypse at Holdout. For the entire match, just stay in the room that you spawn in. You just need to pick off the Grunts as they walk through the door and up the stairs. Each game will yield around 100 to 120 Grunts for you to kill by yourself. Luckily, this should only take about ten minutes at a time, so you should be able to get this commendation in a somewhat short amount of time.
Trigger Happy (Kill an enemy with a small arms weapon in Firefight matchmaking)
Okay, you can only use the Magnum or Plasma Pistol for the Trigger Happy Commendation. You are going to need 16,000 kills with small arms weapons to max out this commendation, which is a pretty hefty number since killing things with these two guns is a slow process. Fortunately, you just need to do Gruntpocalypse at Holdout (Of course!). Like previosly mentioned, just stay in the room you start out in, and kill enemies as they walk into the room from the door or the stairs.
Vehicular (Kill an enemy with a vehicle in Firefight matchmaking)
Simple to understand; hard to accomplish. For some reason, using turrets that aren’t attached to vehicles counts for the Vehicular Commendation. Anyways, you’re going to need to play on a map with a vehicle (or turret. There are a few maps you’ll want to play to get this commendation:
* Holdout (turret)
It takes 14,000 kills with a vehicle (or turret) to max out Vehicular. Of course, this is a pretty time consuming commendation because not many maps have vehicles (or turrets) on them, so your options are pretty limited. Also, it’s pretty hard to kill large numbers of enemies with vehicles because they are likely to kill you fairly quickly – no matter what vehicle you are in.
That’s how you get the Firefight Matchmaking Commendations maxed out! For your reference, here is where I am currently at:
* I have two commendations at Onyx (Target Practice and Numbers Game)
* I have three commendations at Gold (Get Loud, Pull the Pin, and Dome Inspector)
* I have three commendations at Silver (Longshot, Methodical, Specialized)
* I have two commendations at Bronze (In Command and Trigger Happy)
* I have three commendations at Iron (Backup, Riflin’ Through, and Grounded)
* I have two commendations unearned (Vehicular and Perfectionist)
As you can see, the Firefight Matchmaking Commendations are pretty darn time consuming. Some of them are just plain hard to rank up, but they aren’t impossible. You’ll waste quite a few days of your life in an attempt to max them all out though, so be sure to take a break every once in a while. Of course, most people are just going to give up before they max most of these out, but there will be someone out there that gets them all!
