As you progress through the difficulty levels in Blizzard’s Diablo II video game simply staying alive becomes more and more of a challenge. To this end many characters will find themselves eschewing two handed weapons and dual wielding for the added protective bonuses of a shield. Some of the best bonuses out there come from the elite unique shields found in the higher difficulty levels. All elite unique shields share the trait that they offer an enhanced defence over a mundane shield of the same type.
One that first made an appearance in the original Diablo is the Blackoak Shield though like most unique items from the original t is much improved in Diablo II. The Blackoak Shield offers excellent protection against cold based attacks offering from one to sixty-one cold absorption based on character level as well as reducing any freeze duration by half. It also adds between one and one hundred and twenty-two life and one to forty-nine dexterity also based on level. It grants a fifty percent faster block rate and has a four percent chance to cast the Necromancer curse Weaken at level five when your character is struck.
Medusa’s Gaze grants between five and nine percent life stealing per hit and also slows targets struck by twenty percent. It adds between forty and eighty cold resistance and has two proc based abilities. The first is a ten percent chance to cast the Necromancer curse Lower Resist at level seven when striking an enemy, the other is a guaranteed chance to cast level forty-four Nova upon death. The only real advantage of this is that it increases your chance of slaying injured monsters making your body easier to pick back up.
The shield with the highest defence in the game is Spirit Ward granting a twenty-five percent chance faster block rate and twenty to thirty percent better chance of blocking. It increases all resistances by thirty to forty and offers six to nine percent cold absorption. It also grants a five percent chance to cast the Assassin skill Fade at level eight when struck, this further increases your resistances against elemental attacks as well as boosting physical resistance when it is in effect. The bonuses add up to make the Spirit Ward one of the best defensive shields in the game.
Stormshield is an excellent shield due to one trait a damage reduction of thirty-five percent. It also boasts an extra three to three hundred and seventy-one defence based on character leve,l increases chance to block by twenty-five percent at a thirty five percent faster block rate. It also adds sixty to cold resistance twenty-five to lightning resistance, adds thirty to strength and it is also indestructible. Attackers also take ten lightning damage upon striking your character. An excellent shield if only mainly for the damage reduction it offers.
