Growing African Bush Daisy brings a bit of sunshine to your yard in the cooler months. African bush-daisy is one of the plants I find does not mind being planted in late fall or winter in Florida.
In the world of Feng Shui gardening, you would plant daisies to attract loyal love. African Bush Daisy and other daisies would also be nice in a children’s garden if you are into “harmony gardens” with a Feng Shui design.
African Daisy or Gamolepis chrysanthemoides is from the aster/daisy family. It’s a perennial that looks like a bushy chrysanthemum with yellow daisy-like flowers. I often think of it as a cross between yellow mums and daisies.
Meaning of Daisies
In terms of symbolism, daisies are associated with innocence, purity, simplicity, patience and loyal love.
Daisies have been around for thousands of years. In fact, during the excavations on the Island of Crete, archeologists found hairpins decorated with daisies. And ceramic pieces from Egypt also depict daisies.
Native to South Africa, the Bush Daisy is often grown in Florida because it is drought tolerant. It can also bloom year round in Florida, which is great for Florida winter gardens. It has not shown to be invasive.
I have one Bush Daisy (Gamolepis chrysanthemoides) plant growing next to my red Jatropha shrub since I enjoy reds and yellows together in my Florida winter garden.
Here are a few things to know about Bush Daisy:
No. 1: Grow Bush Daisy in the full sun for the best flowering.
No. 2: African Bush Daisy is drought tolerant but should be watered for best flowering.

African Daisies are easy to grow and maintain. Just sprinkle with water when you want to see profuse flowering. They pair beautifully with yellow Necklace Pod and the Perennial Peanut Groundcover. If you want to get started with a Feng Shui garden, daisies always make a lovely addition to symbolize innocence and inspire patience and loyalty. Remember, for Feng Shui, it’s important to keep plants healthy and flowering so remove dead leaves and keep the plants pampered.
