A Green Bay vs. New York Super Bowl could bring up memories of some classic NFL games. That Green Bay vs. New York Super Bowl is possible if both teams win their championship games on Sunday, and it would then create an intriguing matchup that not too many predicted. Getting to see the Green Bay Packers and New York Jets face off on the biggest stage the NFL has to offer would certainly be an interesting game, maybe more so because it would be the first time that the two franchises were to meet in the big game.
Green Bay and New York are the teams that won the first three Super Bowls stretching from 1967 to 1969, and yet they never managed to play against each other in one of those Super Bowl games. Now the 2011 Super Bowl could pit the two teams against each other, beating the odds in the process. Both the Packers and the Jets came into this NFL postseason as wild card teams, displacing them as the potential favorites to make it to the big game. In the AFC the favorite was the New England Patriots (who the Jets beat), and in the NFC the favorite was either the Atlanta Falcons (Packers crushed them) or the New Orleans Saints (Seattle beat them).
Don’t tell fans of the Chicago Bears and the Pittsburgh Steelers that a Green Bay vs. New York game would be what many analysts want to see in the big game, especially with the two formerly mentioned teams hosting their respective championship games. Both Chicago and Pittsburgh received first-round byes after winning their divisions and clinching the No. 2 seed in their conferences. It gave them a chance to sit back and see how things would play out, placing them squarely in the divisional rounds against overmatched opponents. Chicago beat Seattle and Pittsburgh beat Baltimore to set up the two key games on Sunday.
So why is it that Green Bay and New York would make such a great Super Bowl matchup? Pitting two wild card teams in the final game might be against the “plan” of seeding in the NFL postseason, but a Cinderella story is always great for the game. Then you have the outspoken Jets, who can’t wait to talk about an opponent, going up against the quiet, workmanlike approach of the Packers. That doesn’t even get to the personnel match-ups on the field, which could make this one of the most highly anticipated Super Bowls in a while.
First thing is first though, and that is a victory by the Jets in the AFC Championship Game and a victory by the Packers in the NFC Championship Game. No easy task, especially with the talent on the other side of the ball in each game.
