One of the things that I like about Google is that it doesn’t overwhelm you with useless information when you go to its homepage. The good men and women at Google know that you are coming to their page for a search engine and so don’t add all the other things in, but they also know that there are people who want a newspaper, the sport scores, and all those other things on their homepage and they give you that option with igoogle.
Igoogle is easiest to reach by going to google.com and looking in the top right hand corner. There you will see a link that says igoogle. Click on this and you’ll be given the option of signing up. This is generally harmless and many of us already have a Google id since they are becoming more common all the time.
There are a few very basic options here to get started. You can choose your interests, such as local information music, games, technology and the other things you’re likely to search for often.
This will within seconds create a basic homepage for you, and generally it will have at least some of the things you are interested in, but that isn’t what makes igoogle interesting. You can do the same thing in multiple places across the web. What makes Igoogle fun is the button on the right side just below the search bar which says add stuff.
There are literally hundreds of different gadgets which have been created for igoogle on this page and perhaps thousands. These range from joke of the day apps, games, news, stock market tickers and just about anything else you might want to see at a glance. Searching these is easy and there are a number of categories as well.
One of the things that makes searching this so nice is that you don’t have to worry about where these will go on the page. The reason for this is simply that it is very easy to move things around on your igoogle page. Every igoogle gadget has a blue bar across the top and can be moved around to where you want by clicking on that bar and dragging it. In addition to this each one has a menu button (which looks like a triangle pointing down) that lets you delete the gadget, minimize it, share it or find others similar to it. Next to that is a maximize button that lets you have that app fill the website so you can get more information.
The final step, after playing with this for some time is to click the make igoogle my homepage button. This is on the left hand side of the screen just below the search bar and will change your homepage so make certain you want to do so before you choose it.
Igoogle is a bit more cluttered than google.com but it can save you a lot of time if you search out the same information regularly and on top of that it can be fun.
